Nice spicey fruit nose, followed up with notes of tobacco and earth. On the palate is peppery spice, predominant bright fruit with some dark fruit components, hints of dark chocolate and caramel. Good balance, a little hot initially but smooths out pretty quickly. Worked perfectly with my keilbasa dinner.

Purple with a red tinge. Blueberry, mulled spices, and leather on the nose. Blackberries, dark cherries, chocolate, integrated oak, sweet tannins and a medium to long finish. This was much better than my first bottle - nicely balanced, tasty and the funk was gone.

Nice nose of plum, cherry, & blackberry. A little thin at first compared to nose, but opens up to nice rich wild cherry with hint of plum. Very elegant cherry Tempranillo flavors with dark fruit Cab flavors in the background. Elegant and nicely balanced effort.

Popped and poured. Medium purple color. Sweet nose of raspberry and blackberry and spices with a bit of oak and some dark chocolate. More of the same on the palate with some nice round fruit flavors, a touch of caramel from the oak and some more dark chocolate on the back end. Soft tannins, easy drinking. Decent finish. Wife was a big fan. A very tasty wine with or without food.

Big oak and a lot of fruit, made this very enjoyable. Did not get the brett-like aspects that others described at all. Very fruit forward and oaky, soft tannins, and red fruit flavors.

Immediately upon opening, it smelled of funky, sweaty shoe leather. After a while - a long while - it mellowed into a black current and tobacco mix. Purple and quite brickish toward the edges. Black cherry and prunes, chewy, good acid, nicely balanced, drying tannins, and a medium finish. Different, and once I got used to it, pretty good.

Nose shows some red berries with a cream cola component after opening. After its sat for a while there is far more cedar that shows through on the nose. Taste is strawberry with a tootsie-roll / cola component after a pop-and-pour with firm sweet tannins. Oak is there but is far more prevalent after being open an hour; at which point the wine gets some green pepper/vegital components and then the oak really takes over. Pleasantly intrigued especially after opening the bottle.

I found this pretty interesting - it stood out for sure against a smorgasbord of other wines of all types and styles. It had a licorice-grape component that I could see being off-putting to some, but I found intriguing. I had feared a juicy-juice prune experience based on some earlier reviews, but this was tastier than that. Didn't taste like any other wine I've had to date.

To be perfectly honest, sending this to wine club members as a selection seems like a rip off. Very unremarkable. In general I enjoy Twisted Oak wines but this one was disjointed and frankly not very good. 2 bottles, same experience.

Calaveras County Wine Tasting (The Twisted Oak Winery, and Murphys, CA.): Dark garnet/purple in the glass, this wine has a vegetal nose with hints of asparagus and Brett. In the mouth it is nice and extracted with med+ acid and low+ tannins. Ok. $24. No geek sheet.
