We had 10 different 2003 German and Austrian dry Rieslings.

    Breuer Schloßberg
This was by far the best. Not overripe, not haggard, low in alcohol and very balanced. 95

    Hirtzberger Singerriedel
The most powerful wine in this range. 90

    Freiherr Heyl Pettenthal
    Positiv surprise. Balanced. 91

    Reichsrath von Buhl Reiterpfad
Pfalz, too broad, similar to Paradiesgarten. 90

    Reichsrath von Buhl Paradiesgarten
Pfalz, too broad a bit over his peak. 90

    Nikolaihof Steiner Hund
Easy detectable as Austrian Riesling. More powerful, less elegant than the German ones. 90

    Keller Hubacker
This is normally my favourite Riesling wine from 2003, today second best, exotic fruits, candy floss. At his peak. 94

    Keller Kirchspiel
Less elegant than the Hubacker and more evolved but still nicely drinkable. Would drink it now. 92

    Bürklin Wolf Kirchenstück
More evolved than expected. Same problem with the 2004 I had 3 weeks ago. Normally Kirchenstück ripes really slow. Still good drinkable. 92

Markus Molitor Graacher Domprobst Auslese dry **
Some burgundy style, some nuts and honey. 91

  • Although drinkable and not without interest, this bottle was beyond its peak and on the downslope. Apricot blossom aromas, some apricots in the medium-weight mouth, but the softness of texture deprives the wine of energy and freshness. I'd drink soon.

  • Dark yellow, slightly golden in colour. Dried apricot, quince, very concentrated and rich, crushed stones and hints of petrol on the nose. On the palate still dense and powerful, saline, good acidity, not very generous or polished, lots of drive and power, great length. 92-94

  • Deep golden yellow in colour. Petrol on the nose, quite dark notes, ripe apples, apricots, saline, crushed stones. On the palate lime, very mineral, big, very concentrated and powerful, good acidity. Dry. Great length, really persistent. Not sure if it will improve further, but these wines do age very well, even in a difficult vintage like 2003. 92-94

  • Sweet, delicious Riesling fruit; enough acid frame to support the fruit, while conveying some sense of pungency and power. Nice wine, likely much too young.

Second day, from a half-bottle filled from the original immediately on opening: same fine fruit, but firm structure and some power emerging. Should become very fine with additional time, I think.
