Definitely a very good wine. I think it can develop well with another 5 to 7 years of storage. But somehow I still expected a greater experience from a wine in that price range. But that’s probably my personal preference talking rather than the actual quality of the wine.

colour is a light brick red, fully mature. so too is the nose, that of a mature classic brunello, savoury characteristics, charcuterie, soil, tar, sweaty socks. palate is elegant, silky smooth, luxurious in texture, with tart cherry up front and slight sweet and floral flavours that hold on the back end. very gentle tannins on the finish.

This bottle captures my original experience with traditional Brunellos. Lean, more expressive bouquet than flavor, tart cherry, balanced, ok before dinner but opened up when we started our meal of breaded pork cutlet with mushrooms and broccoli rabe. There is nothing modern or lush about this wine, and while not a high-water mark for B-S, it was unmistakably a Brunello and a well-made, clean example at that.

Good wine, but probably not my kind of wine. Decanted for two hours, but still a bit tannic. Nose has plum and tar. Palate is somewhat like molasses flowing over an undertone of chocolate. Good stuff, but I would rather have a good left bank at this price point.

It started out as a simple night...; 4/6/2020-4/7/2020 (Secret Place): The friend had a second bottle open - this. I have had this about half a dozen times over the course of the past 3 years. It is a good wine - no doubt. Blood orange, red and black fruits. Slightly tangy on the finish. But it was monstered by the other wines.

2nd try this year: Nose of red fruits, earth, dried herbs. Tasted red fruits, herbs, spices, with some greens on the finish. Classical in style. Tasted older than it’s age. Slight sour notes after some time out. Open soon, before it moves out of its drinking window.

Beautiful bottle of Biondi-Santi just at the beginning of what ought to be a long drinking window. Opens up heavy on the acid to the point that it almost feels juicy, but the structure mellows and the fruit fleshes out with just a bit of air. And it fleshes out seriously indeed - it's bold and deeply colored and almost a heavyweight by the standards of the producer. It's all fully tertiary flavors of the type that sometimes makes me think of traditional Rioja when I drink these wines, but in this case you'd have to take that profile and fatten it up with some of the Tuscan sun. Regardless where this stands on the weight scales the textural suavity makes it compellingly easy to drink.

Consistent with previous bottle, if a slight notch better. This is pure silk - delicate, finessed, yet the impact on the group was profound. a wine that lingered - in the mouth and on the senses... like a lover’s gentle caress. Lovely.

Nose of red fruits, earth, herbs, with slight honey tertiaries. Palate of red fruits, herbs, spices, with slight mushrooms, vegetal and earth tertiaries. I have not tasted a brunello like this before, but in a good way. Elegant drinking. And I reckon this tasted older than it should, with flavours of “classic dusty Tuscan earth”, to quote another reviewer. This was abit short on the finish though. Nonetheless, enjoyed this bottle tonight. Recommend to open earlier than later.

@Asparagus was kind enough to sponsor another bottle of this at P90
I thought it showed even better than the last time we had it (see Derek Darth Taster notes). To me it was a 92 then but on last night's evidence, it is easily a 93.
Similar notes to Derek Darth Taster. Would add that the nose has a herbal / soy note to it which is fine with me. But this did not feature in the palate. To me, the silkiness and elegance was the distinctive feature of this wine.
This is a prime example of an old school BdM.
It is ready to drink with some air and can still last the distance. No rush at all to drink up.

2004 Dinner at Imperial Treasure to celebrate CL Bday. Slow-oxed in bottle for about 2 hours prior. Drank in Gabriel Standart. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour with thin garnet rim. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of classic dusty Tuscan earth, stony minerality, sour red cherries, deep red cherry essence, red licorice. Meat, leather, and mushrooms with another 2 hours of air. Developing. On the palate, dry, very high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), silky medium+ tannins, taut medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of deep red cherry essence, sour red cherries, stony minerality, dusty red earth, bits of ?thyme. Leather and savoury mushroomy earth with 2 hours of air. Ultra good mouth-feel. Very long finish. Outstanding quality. So silky and so elegant. Loses out to the Salvioni on depth and power, but that isn't what you are supposed to be seeking for when you drink this bottle. Still long life ahead. Bottle number 68373.

Loads of tannin out of the gate, so you need to give this a lot of air time if you aren’t patient enough for more cellar time (which it will surely benefit from further) - after an hour plus, is more approachable and good with food.

Seduced in a heel, red dress. Fine nose, a little raw and dried meat, a bit of carnivore of the Sangiovese. Sour cream present, silk in the mouth. Maybe a little too elusive and without bang, as my wife reminded me of a Le Ragnaie drunk recently, but I found it beautiful because it was fine.

To be honest, not a big fan of the sangiovese grape varietal. But i am starting to change my mind as i drink more and more brunellos. Definitely one of the best brunello i have tasted.
Blind tasted thanks to the generosity of Jess. Pop and poured. A colossal wine. Strong deep intense garnet inkish colour. Nose was a little closed initially but with a mild barnyard, bluecheese scent which blew off as the wine breathed. Opened up into an extraordinary bouquet of floral scent with a tinge of tabacco/flint. The flavour is rich and well structured, with many layers beneath, upheld by a superb cutting acidity which is characteristic of the sangiovese grape varietal. Relatively long finish which returns a flavour of a tinge of leather and eucalyptic sensation.
To be honest i thought this wine was at least 15 years old. Drinking well now but could probably benefit from another 10-15 years of cellaring.
I'm sold.

Theme: Interesting (Pine Close): Tasted blind. Popped and slow-oxed in bottle for 30 minutes. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is medium+ intensity, with an initial slight whiff of barnyard that blew off, revealing aromas of sweet peaty earth and red cherries. Developing. On the palate, dry, bright high acidity, medium+ alcohol. Drying medium tannins but somehow still producing a wonderfully silky mouthfeel. Medium+ body. Pronounced flavor intensity, with flavours of sweet peaty earth and sour red cherries. Red fruit intensity was strong, and there was a sense of great depth, but at this point of time this wine was only showing a more austere face. Long finish. Very good quality traditional style Brunello. Too young to drink and assess now. However, it was still a joy to have tasted this. The future is bright. Give this another 8-10 years. As Biondi Santi himself once said: "The characteristic of Brunello is its longevity. Nature is capable of creating beautiful things—you just have to wait."

2004 Brunello di Montalcino (Scopri): Bit of a disappointment considering the label and vintage. Shows quite bright, with tart fruit, tar and minerality. Mouth feel is fantastic, but is a little short on the palate. A little scalped perhaps?

Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Very difficult wine to assess. Red cherry on nose with lots more earthy elements than I'd expect from such a young wine. Red and black cherry flavors on palate, but acidity and tannins totally dominate today and will most likely dominate for a long time going forward. Clearly in need of many years in the cellar.

I would say this is not your grandmother's Brunello...except that of course it *is* your grandmother's Brunello, made the same way as always before the modernist charge. Transparent ruby in color, medium-bodied. Not much tannin but highly, almost bracingly acidic. The principal element is red sour cherry, with a vegetal note on the nose (fellow taster said celery). Zesty and refreshing, but a richness in the mouth prevents it from being harsh or biting. I was surprised at how well this drinks now, but of course it is meant to be cellared much longer.
