Cork crumbled upon opening. Cherry and dark berries on the nose with sweet spices, cedar, Ground pepper, and pencil shavings. Suave and penetrating with great balance and dark fruit character on the lingering finish. Quite nice for a $30 wine. Has aged nicely. I have always drank these young, but always believed they would age well. I am happy now to have tasted one with some age. I am not disappointed. I only wonder why this producer, having several high-end malbecs does not produce a high-end cab. This Bordeaux blend is quite the bargain for the price, and though usually a bit tannic on release, capable of peaking at about ten years and lasting about twenty in prime condition.

Cork disintegrated upon opening, requiring a decent.
Still a dark purple color with little or no browning on the edges. Nose is subtle, not showing too much. There is still some faint raspberry pie, Christmas baking spices, and a mineral edge to be found though.
In the mouth, it is pure silk with freshness that belies its 14 years of age. Creamy raspberry and cherry take center stage with faint cranberry/strawberry notes emerging mid-palate. Finish is long with more red fruit and good acidity that make this wine energetic and lively. Tannin is perfectly integrated and still provides structure.
Overall, this wine is still going strong and also still in the sweet spot as this bottle was fairly similar to my last bottle almost 4 years ago. My last bottle, but this may drink well for another 5+ years before fading.

Excellent tasting blend composed of 38% Malbec, 24% Merlot, 24% Cab, & 14% Cab Franc grapes. Despite its age, the wine is still fresh & vibrant. It offered a beautiful dark ruby color, pronounced & rich red & dark fruits, medium tannins and a velvety & smooth finish. Overall, excellent tasting wine. Well structured and complex.

Had an herbal edge to it that made It very interesting. The Cab and Cab franc comes through on the finish. An excellent wine that I don’t think will get any better.

Aged for 12 months in oak barrels, of which 60% were used and 40% new. 14% alcohol. Tasted blind.
Deep, dark and practically completely opaque dark ruby color. Rich, yet somewhat restrained and a bit underwhelming nose with rather savory aromas of toasted wood, licorice, ripe dark fruits, some mushroomy earth and a hint of sweet oak spice. The wine feels quite juicy and complex on the palate with subtle developed characteristics of wizened dark berries and pruney fruit. There are also flavors of ripe blackberries and slightly lighter notes of blackcurrants, some leathery character, a little bit of sweet red fruits and a hint of mocha oak. The mouthfeel is suave and velvety, but the wine is still surprisingly fresh and structured with its relatively high acidity and firm, moderately grippy tannins. The relatively tannic finish is quite grippy and slightly warm with intense, ripe and somewhat sweet flavors of fresh raspberry-driven red fruit, some brambly blackberry, a little bit of peppery spice, a hint of ripe plummy fruit and a hint of sweet, toasty oak spice.
A very serious and surprisingly harmonious effort that doesn't suffer from the typical pitfalls of the Argentinian red wines, i.e. sweet and almost jammy fruit, low acidity, overdone oak and lack of character. This is a wine that has held its game together remarkably well for over 10 years and still the wine doesn't seem like it is at its plateau of maturity. The nose was admittedly a bit underwhelming, but on the palate the wine managed to impress. Although my palate prefers more restrained, European wines, this was in my opinion a remarkably good effort and easily one of the best Argentinian reds I've tasted. Probably going to peak in 5-10 years. Recommended.

Birthday Dinner (Mahesh Uncle's House): Malbec, Merlot, Cab Sauvignon, cab franc. Ripe red and black fruit, high alcohol, nice medium-plus acidity, medium tannins; medium finish. Nice mature wine, really easy to drink. 89 On further drinking, this is just a superbly balanced wine with really striking acidity and freshness along with excellent complexity. I underrated this at first. Really lovely. 90-91

Big nose of red fruits, crushed rocks, faint oak spice. The wine delivers when it hits the mouth with layers of red fruit, cassis, raspberry, and black cherry melding into a smooth creamy long finish where a little black pepper spice emerges followed by faint earthy element. Medium to full bodied, the integration and balance were impeccable with perfect acidity to keep the wine fresh. This is better than I remember, tasty stuff. This bottle suggests the wine is reaching peak maturity, but could hold for another decade. I'll drink my other in a couple years.

Somewhat "flat", not bad but not even near as good as other Quimera!
We opened 10 bottles of Quimera from 10 different vintages, from 2002 through 2011 (all of them were properly kept in a temperature and humidity controlled cellar). Vintages 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009 were outstanding! Particularly 2002 and 2003 were not only holding well, they were spectacular, still at their peak! 2004 was, for some reason "gone". Maybe the bottle was exposed to heat before I purchased, or something happened to it. 2010 was corked!! 2007 was "weird", and were not able to pinpoint why! 2011 never quite "opened" like the others. Maybe it was too early to drink! Not very expressive, either on the nose or the palate. Will have to try again in a few years to see if it was just a matter of time!

Great wine. The nose is mostly red fruits, but there are nuisances of graphite and rocks. Pallette shows bright black cherry, cassis, and raspberry fruit with herb flecked earthy spicy ness emerging on the medium long finish where slightly dry tannins emerge at the end. I'd drink now to 2017. Paired with NY strips in green peppercorn sauce.

Very well balanced, fruit forward but weighty. The Malbec and Cab provide structure, but the tannins have softened, and the wine is made lighter by cab franc. It held up to steak, but could have complimented chicken in a hearty sauce. Should last for a while longer, but is ready to drink now. Decant for an hour.

A great wine, but doesn't seem to be as big as in years past. There is plenty of plum, cinnamon, chocolate, oak. Nice blend, good balance and integration. Possible I didn't leave it in the decanter long enough to really open up like this wine has done in 2005-2006 vintages.

Decanted for 1 hour before dinner (smoked chicken breasts on the bone). Similar to last note but much more sour cherry - Tasted blind I would have guessed Sangiovese - black cherry / tobacco & prominent green pepper on nose & palate. As good on night two as night 1. 90-91 range.

I had great expectations of this wine but, despite being a good wine, I´m feeling disappointed. Medium body, not much nose. Perhaps it needed more time to ature or decant. Don´t know really. I visited the winery a couple of months ago and this was supposed to be their best value. I believe their entry level Malbec or their three top of the line Altamira, Bellavista and Mirador are a better value.

Decanted for 2 hours - had with grilled chicken - dry rub of italian seasoning / black pepper / garlic powder & sea salt. blackish / red color. Blackberry / cassis / charcoal / graphite on nonse. On palate, blackberry / plum / red currants with medium+ body and stout tannins (and balanced acidity). Better on night 2. 91+. As prior tasters noted, decant for a few hours if drinking now or hold for a few years.

Lovely, intense Bordeaux blend, really enjoyed this after aeration for a few hours, still young but a perfect pairing for a slab of beef - Dark, well concentrated with a nose of black fruit, plum, cherry, cigar box, cedar and vanilla, nicely structured, complex, really intense, yet balanced, sweet, smooth on the palate with excellent length (92 Points).

We enjoyed 2 bottles of this (always) wonderful wine for my wife’s Birthday, with the rest of the family, on Friday May 7th. Once again, an impressive wine of extraordinary quality! It shows an intense violet color with an alike density; its dynamic nose impregnate your senses with an array of elements including: dark berries, chocolate, toasty oak, tobacco, vanilla, species and minerals as well; its versatile and harmonious taste and distinguish character makes you enjoy this wine more every sip. I am super fan of this wine, believing that a Napa wine of this quality would sell at $80 - $100 rate. This wines retails at an excellent QPR of $30 - $45.

Made from a blend of 38% Malbec, 24% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc sourced from low-yielding vineyards in Lujan, Medrano and Tupungato this wine was aged in a mixture of new and old French oak for 12 months.
Ruby red in the glass, this wine was initially a little closed. Eventually it began to show mainly savoury, earthy aromas on the nose with just a hint of violets. The palate was rich, mouth-filling and elegant. It showed fleshy blackberry and blueberry fruit, a touch of spice and chewy tannins on the finish.

Dark ruby, essentially opaque. Fair amount of vanilla oak on the nose, palate is thick and lush dark red fruits, not overly ripe, but quite rich, but what else do I use to describe this wine? Generic. Decent, generic red, with too much oak to fill in the holes and mask whatever natural fruit is back there. Well made, perfectly decent wine, but there are too many wines with character to waste money or time drinking this.

Decanted 1.5 hours, but tasted periodically. Improved slightly over the first 45 minutes or so in terms of balance and drinkability. Still, muted nose, smooth on the palate, but nothing remotely interesting. A very well-done, unremarkable, and somewhat boring wine.

Icons of the Andes tasting (Crown - Boca Raton, FL): Some drying tannins again, but still quite smooth and expressive with blackberry and currant fruit, ending with a 35-40 second finish with nice complexity and a little oak. Will likely pick up a point or two with a little age. 91-92

Achaval Ferrer Winery Visit (Lujan de Cuyo, Mendoza - Argentina): 20% CS - 10% CF - 40% Malbec - 30% Merlot The blend changed a little in in 2008 as they introduced some petit verdot. Touch of licorice, smoke and a mix of red and dark fruits (more of a dark fruit profile though). Med body, med+ acidity, palate matching the nose with a little more vanilla. I've never been a fan of the Quimera and this was not different. It is not a bad wine but it is a little boring and forward for me.

Medium+ ruby with modest fading at the rim
Subtle, harmonized and just starting to show tertiary notes. Core of black plum and blackberry. Spicy / clove. Cedar and forest floor / truffle.
Tannins are smooth but maintain a presence. Acidity is persistent and refreshing. Alcohol fully integrated.
Flavours are exceptional and long. Black cherry, blackberry, chocolate, juiceberry candy, fruit cake, pepper and wet earth.
Exceptional wine at peak. Drink now

Saturdays at One - Volume 13: WIML91
Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of aspirin, black berries, black cherries, a bit of plum and some floral notes. Rich flavors of berries, boysenberries and black cherries. medium acidity, medium to firm tannins, medium to full bodied. Drink now with some air or continue to hold.

South America (Farpointe Cellar): The nose had lots of perfume and dark fruit, earth, and a little cedar. The palate was smooth, with cherry and raspberry, cedar, floral notes, and some earth on the finish.

Malbec/Cab/Merlot red blend. Among one of my favorites tasted @ 3rd Annual NY Wine Expo at JJCC. Dry, full-bodied wine w/excellent clarity and balance throughout, and very concentrated, well-structured and complex. Enticing aromas.

Decanted 2 hours. Continued to improve as warmed throughout the evening. Nose of cherries. Smooth, bright. Medium finish.

Decanted 1.5 hours, but tasted periodically. Improved slightly over the first 45 minutes or so in terms of balance and drinkability. Still, muted nose, smooth on the palate, but nothing remotely interesting. A very well-done, unremarkable, and somewhat boring wine.

Zachys Fall 2009 Food & Wine Extravaganza (The Lighthouse at Pier Sixty (NYC)): red fruit sits on top of some vegetal flavors.

Icons of the Andes tasting (Crown - Boca Raton, FL): Some drying tannins again, but still quite smooth and expressive with blackberry and currant fruit, ending with a 35-40 second finish with nice complexity and a little oak. Will likely pick up a point or two with a little age. 91-92

Achaval Ferrer Winery Visit (Lujan de Cuyo, Mendoza - Argentina): 20% CS - 10% CF - 40% Malbec - 30% Merlot
The blend changed a little in in 2008 as they introduced some petit verdot.
