1993 Mongeard-Mugneret Grands-Echezeaux

  • Very deep red center with red rims. High- intensity nose of cola, blackberry, minerals, and some black spices.

In the mouth, this wine had notable rounded tannin, firm acidity, and great length. Very serious, intense, and impressive.

This is really rather young and will probably be better in 5-10 years but it is already pretty great. It may well get better.

  • The nose was slightly extracted with red currant, blue fruit, ginger flower and spice. Weighty palate with plenty of stuffing. Still very youthful like many 93s. It will likely add more nuance with age. 92-93

  • Grands Echezeaux: Served blind. VA and/or heat damage, it was undrinkable to all at the table.

  • Pop. 93 mongeard is one of his best vintage ever made. Nose has Asian spice, ginger flower, earth and berries. Palate is balanced with good precision. For the domaines 93, I actually like his richebourg and clos vougeot more, but this GE is still a pleasure to drink today.

  • A Burgundy Night (San Francisco): Even ruby. Beautiful nose of Asian spice, strawberry, and hoisin. Medium weight with gradual addition of sap as it opened. Gentle sweetness of red fruit, a touch of herbs, not as stemmy as the other Grand Crus tonight, excellent acidity and length. Seductive wine that grew over time. Impressive freshness of fruit at this stage. Outstanding and consistent with my prior bottle.

  • Great bourgogne. Classic in every respect and drinking very nicely now. Still potential for more positive evolution.

Agrees with drwine's note from 1/28/2014

  • Wet cork almost rust colored. Tastes ok. No distinct notes but definitely good

  • Deep ruby without any visual sign of maturity. A strong whiff of charred oak quickly blew off, giving way to gamy, spicy cherry fruit, fresh ground coffee and then secondary perfume and pine needle. Big for Pinot, terrific intensity, exhilarating acidity and round tannins atop a discretely woody base. Grand Cru depth and character, still in the early portion of its drinking window. I was shocked to see how similar my note was from just over 8 years ago and how slowly it has opened up. Forceful wine with early complexity.

  • Cork was wet through and through but the wine seems in good condition. Color is surprising for a wine this age--deep ruby with no bricking whatsoever. The nose is also fairly tame. Some fungal elements but not much fruit. A little jam and spice under the surface. On the palate, mushrooms and dark berries explode forward, then quickly give way to a dry woodiness with a slightly bitter finish. Even after 4 hours, the bitter finish never mellowed. If not for that I would have scored this in the 90s.

  • Popped and poured, drank over the following 3 hours and then one more glass the next night. Dark ruby. Beautiful nose of dark fruits and sous bois. But over time it becomes a bit more woody. in the mouth, again lots of sweet dark fruit and earth. but it also seems to be drying out a touch. Lots of really interesting and good things going on, but a bit muddles by the woodiness, which is too bad. its possible that in another 5 years this completely integrates, but the touch of dryness leaves me not completely convinced. Very good, but not great.

  • Dark color. Dark fruit on the nose with spice. Some truffle escence. The palate is wound up tight. Not showing the detail it will with aging.

  • Certainly the best bottle I've ever had from this producer who never quite reaches the heights for me, and one of the better Burgundies I've tasted recently. Healthy dark ruby color without the slightest lightening or browning. Forthcoming, in fact, dizzying aroma of red fruits, toffee, and a whiff of earth immediately, with a lush mouth feel, nice core of well integrated acidity, and a lovely long finish. Coffee elements emerged as the initial burst of fruit receded, and surprisingly, a green, menthol-like note became the dominant aroma some 3 hours after the bottle was opened. Much more wine here than the Echezeaux VV tasted some 2 years ago, and with some time in hand, although perhaps not as much as the youthful color would suggest. Bottle by bottle, I am continually more impressed by this vintage, which for me is quite a turnaround from a year or two ago. Patience, patience.
