Final btl of this after 16 years in the box. Similar to the one from 2020, this is really nice and challenges my long held assertion that I no longer like CdPs and that I should not have bought so many of them. Huge flamboyant nose of candied cherries, kirsch, underbrush, balsamic and mushroom, and yes, very bretty (which I don't have a problem with). Gobs of black pepper. The opposite of subtlety but in an Old World not International way. This is ultimately a bit hot in the mouth (EtOH) and slightly drying which speaks to the fact that this is a couple-few years in the decline. Even so, this is an excellent wine experience and one that demands attention. I think I have only one remaining '03 Charbonniere CDP left (a different cuvee) and I will try to get to that soon.

Bought in '05 for $24. Last bottle in '17 was spoiled, but this one is truly superb. While I bought so much CDP 15-20 years ago, I eventually came around to thinking I didn't really enjoy drinking them (except Ch Beaucastel, of course), but this wine really challenges that assertion. Gorgeous fruit of dark berries, kirsch, and black cherries. Saddle leather, tar, forest floor. Nice iron finish with dusty tannins. This is truly drinking beautifully and has likely benefited greatly from age. I have a few more older bottle from this domaine in box that I am now looking forward to.

Dark red verging on ruby. Fine aromas of coffee, cherry and leather. Palate is more austere with leather predominate. Fruit for the most part hinted at rather than tasted until the last glass of the approximately half bottle drunk on night one (decanted by the way.) Overall, a fine accompaniment for wagyu New York strips. Did I note this is from the super-hot 2003 vintage? Doesn't have overripe or much ripe fruit. But, given glacial yet noticeable development over the last 13 years, I wager that this would make a surprisingly outstanding drink at age 25 or 30. Alas, for my last bottle, this is merely Excellent.

Bought on release, finally got to one. Poopy poopy poopy! This is by far the poopiest Pape I have ever had. If Beaucastel is kitty litterbox, this stuff is an outhouse for a Bengal tiger. Now I love brett as much as the next dude, but this is way way over the top to the point that I have to say that it is flawed. It tastes like.... well you know. There is also some slight pricking on the tongue. Underneath this is typical grenache fruit, some saddle leather, and decaying leaves. Hard to recommend this wine at this stage but my fault for hanging on to this for so long. I have more of this so perhaps it is an off bottle. I have drunk the whole Dm Charbonniere range from the mid-90s to early 00s, although this is my first 03 in this cuvee, and overall I have found them to be classic and well-made. This one if just too fecal to enjoy.

Garnet. Herbs de Provence, pine needles, forest floor and mercurochrome. Lotsa sediment (decant or stand up for some time). After ½ the medicine blows off. Red fruit, strawberry, and dusty dried herbs. Drinking really well. Great QPR.

Garnet. Herbs de Provence, pine needles, mountain forest floor, and mercurichrome nose. Lotsa sediment (I'd decant or really stand up). Medicinal odor gone after ½ hr of air. Red fruit, strawberry, and dusty dried herbs. Drinking really well.

Nice notes of spice in the bouquet, but another less pleasant aroma as well, a sort of eucalyptus odor. Decanted for 40 minutes, moderate amount of sediment. Pleasant tasting with the spice joined by some light fruit. A good wine but not an exceptional one. Went well with a hearty stew.

A particularly good bottle of this. dark fruited nose with licorice, funk and game. Ripe fruit but good structure dark and brooding but with enough balancing sweetness to the fruit to make it a good drink. Excellent bottle.

Brooding black and purple fruits, loads of spices, and prune-like stewed fruits, characteristic of the vintage. On the palate, medicinal cherries, vanilla, some oak, brush, slight sweetness, almost a "twang" (not sure what that means, but I wrote it down and it still resonates). Little acid, some tannins poking out—this is likely at its peak. Short finish. I enjoyed this quite a bit with Turkish food and overall was very pleasantly surprised. Rated 1 on a scale of -1 to 3.

This tasted fully mature with the fruit drying a little. Colour was still good though so it certainly didn't look old. Needs another try but not sure if this has a long life on this showing.

Classic CNDP. This bottle didn't show any of the hotness, dryness or rasping tannins often associated with this region in this vintage. No signs of anything but a still fairly youthful wine with plenty of fruit still to mature. Youthful Kirsch nose, a touch porty but not excessively so, dark red fruits, a hint of pepper and subtle hillside herbs. To taste, it is still on the young side but full of ripe red fruits, kirsch, good balance and with tannins in check. In all a very nice Chateauneuf that I expect to enjoy another 11 bottles of over the next 5 years or so.

Grenache dominant, not hot as one might expect for the vintage, even leaning towards elegance. Still not that expressive and definitely outshone by two other CDP that night. Very Good.

Medium red colour, with red rim showing signs of age. Sweet nose with fairly off putting mix of barnyard and cherries (if you dig deep). Rich mouth feel (almost sweet), dried red fruit, herbs and that funk again, some tannins beneath all this, faded fruit on the finish. Not a favorite. Maybe this is going to turn into something great over time, but it seems past it already and out of balance.

PnP to celebrate Intl Grenache Day. We love this funkity funk funky barnyard wine. its a drink now, but I have two more left over, one for our 10th wedding anniversary next year.
I can't explain the low scores below, except this is a funky beast that many may not like. I love this stuff, for the under 25$ i paid for the wine.

Popped and poured and consumed over 3 hours. A bit more open for business than some previous tasters have noted. Sweet cherry and plum flavors. Fairly fruit forward and juicy- characteristic of the vintage. Some thin tannins on finish. This didn't have a lot of complexity, but was a nice quaff on a cold early winter evening.

A strong barnyard component on the nose and the palate, except at the finish when the olive and dark berries finally started to make their presence known. Good long finish was most redeeming quality.

I have now had all 3 of these 2003 Kermit Lynch 2003 Domaine de la Charbonnière Châteauneuf-du-Papes - I am rarely disappointed in KL wines but these were just not up to the hype/marketing. This wine started off woody and earthy and hot on the palate, some dark fruit. It did get better the longer it was open. One glass left for day two....much smoother and not hot. So I am thinking one needs to have this open for a while....It is not an open and pour kinda wine

Initially very closed and tannic. Opened up gradually until it spoke softly of ripe cherry and hints of cocoa powder. Definitely a solid CdP, with at least a few more years of aging potential.

This wine got better in the glass. I would have liked to have come back to this one at the end of the night, but there was none left in the bottle.
NOSE: funky! earthy; hint of brett; secondary aromas of fig and sour cherry peak through this classic CdP nose
BODY: considerable sediment suspended in the wine; medium bodied.
TASTE: Initially, too much brett for my taste, but this very gradually blew off in the glass; earthy; fruits are there, but secondary (mostly fig, a hint of plum); short finish. This is a nice CdP, but seems to be holding back right now. I would sit on this for a few years.

Wine warehouse tasting of CDP 2003. 29.99USD. I beleive this CDP has the tannic fruit balance that will roll out to a beautiful wine years from now. Currently, it is a huge tannic beast. That said, I am going to buy a little, and wait. It needs age.
