Opened at a dinner with my Nebbiolo tasting group. Bottle in great shape. Fill into the neck. But. Tired. Developed a bit after decanting. Nose had some life and lift to it. Palate showed some red berry fruit. But overall, tired.

Double decanted at 11am for 7pm dinner, moderate sediment. Bright ruby color, if served blind, would not have guessed ’64 from color. Wonderful bouquet of older Barolo, black fruit, tar, and rose petals – very fragrant aromas, leaping out of the glass. A purity of flavors on the palate, the fruit still present but with old-wine flavors intermixed; a concentration of flavors that seem remarkably to have many years of exceptional life ahead of them. A velvet but firm mouth feel, tannins supporting a smooth velvet texture that gives the wine a firm mid-palate, the wine gives the impression of roundness in the mouth. Most surprising is the presence of fruit that seems remarkably fresh for a wine of this age.

Breathlessly pop and poured. Gleaming and packed with sediments this wine juice thump the tasting glass of mine. The quantity of sediments are utterly gargantuan (in lack of better word), entirely crammed with dry extract. My thoughts immediately wanders off to how the mouth-feel must've felt like at the time of bottling, puzzling. The 1964 is garnet-like and gauzy see-through, even with the muddling sediment action.
Clean and highly aromatic nose that intend to some extent to dark fruits. There's an immortal feel to this nose, as it clearly has even more to give. The nose is developed but brings me slightly young aromas like cacao and mint. The vast complexity is being topped with hints of fennel, rosehips, floridness and a clue of acrid spice followed by a complementary underplaying tone of iron minerality. It's madly focused and alluring.
On the palate the wine is bone-dry with an well concentrated acidity. Tannins are still there, full of structure although so diminutive and feminine. The structure is tied up in the wonderful delicate flavor intensity . To the extent of sharing a tear, this wines structure and complexity engulfs me. It gives me characters of fennel, rosehip jelly, mint, perfume and a metallic sensation. This wine doesn't joke around in every way, so tempting and thrilling. It finishes in pure delicate harmony and proceeds almost never endingly.
At the time the grapes were harvested, Bruno Giacosa was 35 years old. If I've accomplished whatever thing near so incredible as this wine before the same age, I'll be the proudest man living. What shocks me is the multidimensional complexity, layer after layer and the incredible durability. Giocosa is truly one of the most profound grand winemakers of our time. This wine truthfully rivals some of the best wines in the world - beyond words. In my personal view this wine still has potential for further cellaring.
