  • Brought this to Tunglok Peking Duck for dinner with my wine mates. Theme of the Evening: Wines that start with the letter S.

One of my favourites in the earlier part of my drinking days. This is a wine that has continued to wow and impressed me over the past decade. A hidden gem, the wine-makers of this wine deserves high praises for their skillful craft in wine-making and creating a blend that is so satisfying on the palate yet pleasing on the wallet.

In the glass, the wine reveals a deep and alluring ruby-red color, indicating its richness, depth and age.

On the nose, the wine offers a captivating bouquet of ripe dark fruits, such as blackberries and plums, intertwined with notes of black cherries and a hint of blueberries. These luscious fruit aromas are complemented by subtle hints of earthy spices, tobacco, and a touch of vanilla from the oak aging.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied nature and complex. The dark fruit flavors, with the blackberries, plums, and cherries creating a harmonious and bold expression. This is further enhanced by layers of rich cocoa, coffee, and a gentle smokiness, adding depth and dimension to the wine's profile. Tannins are well resolved, with a long and lingering finish.

While the rest of wine community recommended drinking this wine earlier rather than later, I would give this wine a 10 to 15 years cellaring before opening to allow the senses to appreciate what a good, mature Chilean blend tastes like. Good wines do take their time to mature.

  • Dark red at the rim - dark fruits and some black tea on the nose. Full bodied with quite hefty tannins, blue fruits on the palate, once given a couple of hours in the decanter the wine becomes a bit more relaxed and softens, fresh with a fair length. Quite a bit of sediment, good for a few years in the cellar yet.

  • Modern style, rich taste, quite powerful, good development. Lacking some elegance. Still has a lot of life left in it and might improve further over the next 3 years. Very suitable for a rich (charcoal) grilled meat dish.

  • Drank this during a family dinner tonight.

Wet rocks, fresh mushrooms and forest floor. Very different from the 2006 I had 2 years ago. This version is more rustic and down to earth, as compared to the 2006 which is more refined and elegant.

  • Heavily oaked and bombastic. Nevertheless there is good fruit and an intriguing mix of flavors underneath.

  • A fair amount of oak, deep rich smooth body, complex fruit and considerable tanins - this my be very nice in a few years - could do with cellaring.

  • A pleasant wine with a variety of distinctive flavours. Full nose of well made red wine. Dark fruits with hints of tobacco. Will approach again in a couple of years time when the tannins have softened a little.

  • I've seen this wine scored 90+ by many respected critics, and I just don't see what I'm missing. To me, this is too oaky, too alcoholic and quite disjointed. The nose is solid enough, showing dark chocolate, graphite and concentrated dark fruits; however after catching glimpses of minerals and tar on the palate, a huge alcohol spike elbows its way in and ruins everything which has come before. This massive wine is all mouth and no trousers, and rather disappointing as a result.

  • Bright smokey black currant cherry on the nose. Dark and dense but stays bright. Nice evolution in the glass. Earthy spiced plums. If I must criticize, it is a touch paint by numbers in that there are no real surprises or anything that makes it really stand out from the crowd. On the other hand, the numbers that it paints are pretty on the mark. When you consider the price, it's hard to beat. Very good QPR. "RH" on jancisrobinson.com pegs this as having reached it's peak. I really wonder it it doesn't have still have one or two secrets it's still holding on to.

  • inky color, very dark. Nose is dark fruit, oak, toffee, pine cone.

dark fruit onthe palate. What stands out is the body and mouthfeel. This is wonderful. Well made. tannins are a little harsh, I think this would be much better with some age or a long decant. I think in 5 years (or two hours in the air) this is a 5/5.

    4/5

  • This is a really reliable wine, with constantly high quality through vintages. Very dark purple. Typical Chilean red aromas of ripe black fig and currants with sweet spice and loam. Full-bodied with firm tanins, very rich fruit and balancing acidity. Long finish. Needs some time to fully come together. From 2013.
