A private lunch with friends (at home): Well-priced, well-aged Grande Champagne Cognac, fresh and energetic, chalk and candied orange, floral lift and nutty complexity, hint of heat on the finish. A great way to finish an excellent meal.

A private dinner with friends (at home): Approximately 25 years old, organic farming, no caramel or tannins added. Delightful as always, silky smooth, chalky freshness and ripe orange fruit, with a hint of spicy vanilla, rounded and supple but pure and energetic, delicate but intense, feminine style with a lovely floral lift, linear and long, hint of almonds on the long finish. Very charming rather than really profound, but I can't help loving it for its finesse and sheer drinkability. A firm favourite, very lively and engaging for its age. That's the terroir for you!

A private dinner (Restaurant De Lage Vuursche, Lage Vuursche, NL): Spiced orange fruit and chalk, hints of nuts and caramel, harmonious and fresh, silky texture, rounded and elegant, floral and lifted finish with candied oranges, some back-end heat but good length.

A private dinner (Restaurant De Lage Vuursche, Lage Vuursche, NL): Delicious as always, identical to my previous notes. A heady but very elegant symphony of chalk, oak, flowers and fresh fruit, deep and energetic, steely but rounded (a subtle hint of caramel), with excellent length. Great value.

Very much like my previous note - same bottle presumably. Stunning orange fruit, like Grand Marnier without the sugar. Very attractive if not of the highest order because of some rough edges. At restaurant De Lage Vuursche, NL.

First glass from a newly opened bottle. Really very attractive and impressive, marries wonderful freshness and chalky minerality to intensity and power. Great balance, hint of nuttiness, wonderful orange fruit on the palate, lovely length. Just a hint of heat and resin from the wood to stop it short from real excellence.

Intense, vibrant, slightly on the sweet side, not the ultimate precision but complete and with the inimitable GC character, good flavours of flowers, nuts and candied fruit, underlying chalky minerality, very good length.

In both color and taste it's at first fresh and youthful, but with air it develops some walnut and chocolatey tones, plus hints of rancio. Very young seeming for a 20-25 yr old (arguably a good thing), but a steal at that price.
