Screwcap bottle. Medium yellow color, showing maturity, but not too developed. Spectacular nose and palate. Bursting with apricots, cream, peaches and baked apples. But the acidity... wow! Still fresh and full of energy. Really persistent finish as well. Purchased in 2004 for $20... what a deal.

NobleRottersSydney - Christmas Lunch 2019 (Geoffrey's place): [Graeme] {AP 11 03, screwcap, 9%} The inaugural vintage under screwcap, and it looks like something from an 80s soft-drink bottle, not the slick stelvins we see these days. Deep yellow colour. This has an aged nose of tropical fruit, pineapple, fruit salad, custard. The palate is an aged medium-dry affair, with medium acid, only light/medium weight, extra aged lime and apple flavours all in filigree style. Great balance along the tongue, medium/long finish. Really terrific wine. I bought this in 2003 - this is my first taste. That's patience!

No formal notes, but a very popular Thanksgiving wine. Notes of heirloom apples and pineapple with a very nice balance of sweetness and acidity. Drinking well now, but my guess is that it is just slightly on the downward slope.

Aromas of smoke, petrol, funk, and ripe fruits. Great balance between the creamy richness of the palate and electric acidity, creating that prickly mouthfeel characteristic of many off-dry Rieslings. Drinking very well right now.

deep yellow in color, pineapple and melon flavors. Medium to full body, sweet with a little acidity on the finish. A little sweeter than I like a Riesling. On the other hand, my wife loved it. Interesting to read the tasting notes on this wine from 6 to 7 years ago. It seems that the wine has undergone a transformation from a balanced wine with good acidity to a wine where the acidity has receded into the background and the sweet fruit is more forward now.

My last bottle. Paired with Tibetan dumplings. Golden yellow color. A little funk on the nose. Earthy and tropical at the same time. Deep. Almost creamy texture. Banana on the finish. Showing very well now. 92-93 points

Some seepage through the cork, but this wine was not cooked. Pineapple and tinned peaches on the palate, supported by ample backbone and acidity, with a slight petrol note on the finish.

Brought this bottle to LostVerse's house last weekend for an offline. 5th time I have had this wine. This bottle was not showing as well as the last bottle in 2009. Silky texture with a little whiff of petrol on the nose. Notes of lush pear and blue slate (Allred and I debated the color of the slate before settling on blue). 91 points.

Opened by Otis this weekend. 4th time I have had this wine. Last time was about 3 years ago and the wine was in a dumb phase. This wine is singing now. An impressive effort and a tribute to the high quality of the 2002 vintage in the Rheinhessen region was overlooked because it came after the great 2001 German vintage. Otis paired this wine with a grilled mahi mahi, homemade guacamole and watermelon salsa first course. Excellent pairing. This wine had excellent purity. Tropical fruit notes and a long finish. 93 points.

Light petrol touch with nettles lime and redcurrant. In the mouth limey with sweet tropical fruits, mango and pineapple and a mineral finish. The acidity just about holding the sweetness in place and excellent concentration, Long long length. (92)

Drinking great right now, with the apple fruit elevated by vibrant acidity and ample fruit sweetness. Soars on the finish. Better than I was expecting.

Nose is quite closed, but there is some citrus peel in the background. The palate is lovely - rich fruit, a touch of spice and teasing sweetness. Probably needs 10 years to show its full potential though.

Loads of potential here...this wine will shine bright in 6-8 years with a new level of complexity. Nose is still unevolved and somewhat closed. Drinking this now is frankly infanticide! Driving acidity and fruit intensity will combine to deliver long life and a positive evolution into a fine old lady.

Third time I've had this wine. R2 opened one last night. Just as good as the last time I had it. Even slightly better. Still needs time to really shine though. 91-92 points.

Southern Season Riesling Tasting (Chapel Hill): Nose of orange fruits--oranges, apricots--and some spice. In the mouth this reveals a delicious tang on the side palate and is only moderately sweet at the moment. The finish is long and shows delicious pink grapefruit and tangerine with mineral overtones. I enjoyed this very much and think it's worth opening one now to experience all the complexity this is showing in its youth.

AP #11-03. Dinner at Tru. Pale yellow with the typical aromas of a young Gunderloch where everything appears to be there but is slightly below the surface. Slight spritz upon pouring which then dissipates. Lemons, green apples and sweet tarts in this medium bodied wine. Medium length finish. Still way too young but shows strong potential. 50+12+11+7+7 = 87+

Otis opened this at his annual CDP this year. This was voted the best 2002 Spatlese by the German wine guide Gault Millau. This was showing much better than when I last had it in May 2004 at the Las Vegas Grand Tour. Creamy apple, tropical fruit and spice notes. 91 points.

AP #11-03. Green tinged in color this wine is very young and in need of cellar time to show what it really has to offer.Tropical fruit, light botrytis, sweet tarts and pineapple were evident in this lusciously sweet, medium bodied wine. Medium length on the tart finish. 50+11+11+8+7 = 87.

I did not detect any sulfer or off odors on the nose of this wine. However, the wine did seem a bit restrained and in need of some time to come together. I did not take formal notes but liked this wine. Wait until 2006+ to drink this. 90-91 points.

Tasted at BirDungy's off-line dinner in London. At first, this had a sulfurous, sewer nose. After about 25 minutes, it blew off, but nothing interesting really sprang up in its place. All the action is in the middle of this wine. It has an intense core of granny smith apple flavor and chalky mineral overtones. The finish is a bit puckerish and tart. I like the '02 Gunderloch Auslese better by about 4 pts. This one needs a little time to balance out.

UltimoWineCentre - German wine dinner: Both these wines were a watery pale colour, with only a hint of straw. Gunderloch yielded tropical stonefruits with a splash of apricot. Gentle and delicate on the palate, the slight sweetness is carried by luminous acidity. Immensely drinkable.
