NobleRottersSydney - odd year reds (Fix, St James, Sydney): {cork, 13%} [Graeme] I had low hopes despite a good level, but this turned out pretty well. Double-decanted three hours earlier, which helped it open out a bit. Softly earthy, dust, and old leather aromas. Aged mulberry flavours, with an iodine quality, a blackness, and a twist of spice. Red olive seeds, says Glenn. Are they a thing? Some leather here too. Low/medium dusty tannins, medium acidity. About medium weight, with even presence along the tongue, medium long finish, lacking the last word in complexity but otherwise pretty impressive. Drink up though.

Decanted 45 mins. Nose shows garrigue, brambles and violets. Palate is medium intense with good brambles and lavender. Slightly lacking in depth but well balanced. Drink soon.

Little funky on opening, but blew off in 15 minutes. Dark berries, mineral+acid : balanced; medium bodied and elegant ... not a fruit bomb. Fantastic evolution from when it was young and not nearly as interesting. Still has some fruit, but this is at peak maturity now. Kept a leftover glass in the bottle for the next day and it was not nearly as good. Glad I just drank my last bottle. I didn't expect too much from this bottle and was pleasantly surprised.

I had this last night at a restaurant and was very pleased. It had good strong deep red fruit and a back-bone to suggest it would go for much longer, and even continue to develop. There was the typical northern rhone smoke-pepper-chocolaty edge.
There was a cellartracker review from October '08 that I thought still sums it up very well.

Smoke, black cherries, spices and kirsch on the enjoyable nose. Quite delicious in the mouth, with refreshing acidity, good fruit (cherries, fresh prunes), kirsch, meat, smoke and a hint of chocolate. Not heavy, quite fresh, but with just enough stuffing. Perfectly drinkable now, needs some food though.

Final persistente. Excelente

Deep purple with hints of ruby at the rim. Full-bodied, rich, with intriguing roasted black olives, sea breeze, and tarragon. Lacks great flavor focus and clarity--seems a bit muddled, with a slightly hollow midpalate. Still, shows better than Syrah from most anywhere else...

Another very nice '97 Hermitage, 2nd in a row. I swore it was '96. Lots of acid.
