Tasting like a quality Aussie shiraz, with gobs of blackberry fruit to it; almost over the top in its ripeness but just enough acidity to balance it out; shockingly, lots of life left

I didn't take notes on it, except that it has gone beyond my preference window for it. By some standards, it is still holding up well - dark color, complex nose of dark fruits, but I found it a bit shrill and having lost the roundness of flavor that I would have enjoyed.

Just the right time to drink this wine. We were looking for something to drink with cornish hen and sausage/prune/walnut stuffing. The Turley was powerful, with a nose of pepper and strong blackcurrant notes. We drank it right after uncorking, and it was great immediately and didn't change much through the meal. The wine was not at all astringent, and had great structure. We've cellared this wine for about two years and decided to bring it up for this meal. Good choice. Drink up.

My last bottle...Pop and pour...still showing a dark purple with a tart red berrie nose and a little spice in the back ground. Ready to go...still firm, but more than approachable with a medium entry and firm mid palate grip of fruit that while tasty...was almost a little fat. Still held together by a non obtrusive frame...drink up.

Too bad this was my last bottle, as it showed perfectly. Right from the pop, all of the fruit and great spice were present. Such a well crafted wine, showing a touch of cinnamon, cardamon, rhubhab, wrapped in the framework to balance it all out.

Now showing some nice bottle age, this wine had aromas of capsicum, earth and berry fruit on the nose. The palate was quite woody and full of pepper and spice. Doesnt have the refinement of a Lodi, Russian River or Sonoma Zin.

Dark ruby in the glass right to the edge - A restrained nose of berry fruit, spice, earth and green pepper - In the mouth a rustic ( in a good way ) style of wine with cherry liquer, spice and tannins that are showing through the fruit. A good zinfandel and one of the best values in the Turley line up.

A very balanced zin with less heat than I expected. It accompanied a heavily peppered steak but the berry fruit did not fade away. It was well liked by those who shared it with me.

Dark purple color with a red rim and sharp nose of tart sour cherry and red berries to smooth it out. An almost fruit sweet entry followed quickly by a warm and pleasant fruit grip that had a nice lingering finish. The nose said red fruit, but there seemed to be a little blackberry underneath it all on tasting.

Nice inexpensive intro to the Turley line, if you can get it. $20. Nose of berry and evergreen. Flavors of bing cherry, berries and oak. Tannins are quite moderate. This should be good to drink for about 2-3 years. Not over the top like so many Turleys.

Probably should have decanted and waited a spell...but popped and poured...a sharp linear nose of bright red berries with a tart twang...not at all smooth but a sharp grip of fruit that tended to have some rough edges. I'll decant and wait a spell next time.

Consumed at home with beef, served at approximately 65 degrees. Bright disc. Deep ruby robe with red rim. Clean nose, showing moderately intense aromas of ripe blackberries, vanilla, crushed black pepper and licorice. Full-bodied on the palate, with low acidity, big ripe tannins, loads of glycerin and mouthfilling flavors which mirror the nose. Although the alcohol is substantial in this wine, it is so well-integrated that there is no dominance of heat. Medium, smooth finish.

Decanted about 4.5 hours. Vanilla oak and mixed red fruits on the nose. The palate is bursting with red cherries and raspberry, very jammy, with noticeable alcohol on the medium body. The finish brings in some spiciness from the oak and some noticeable, though not unpleasant, alcoholic warmth.

Still a great value, the '02 Juvenile is a pretty typical Zin, but the extra bit of stuffing and "oomph" one expects from Turley. Bright, red fruits, some spicy characteristics, and a medium-body make this an enjoyable quaffer.

Last of my stash of this wine and though while good, it showed the least impressive of my 3 bottles, coming across as a little monolithic and flabby. A zing of alcoholic heat flashed through the finish as well. Not bad, but not exciting.

From memory, having had this 3 days ago, this wine was better than I expected given the TNs comparing this with the Old Vines where it always seems to come up on the short end of the stick. The nose and palate had good, dare I say, restrained spice and pepper with a very pleasant finish, absent of the alcohol burn experienced with many Turleys. This wine reminded me of a more lush version of the '01 Nalle Zin I have been drinking through. A very nice effort and more enjoyable (particularly with food) than prior vintages I have had. I'm looking forward to the Old Vines.

Birthday dinner for Mike at Chops in ATL. Going from memory. Followed a 2000 Vieux Telegraphe "La Crau" CdP. Everyone eating steak. Typical full-throttle Turley zin, with cola and berry elements, penetrating flavors, and a lengthy finish. $105 at the restaurant--way expensive considering the mailing list price.

Almost black in color. Dense and rich, with rounded flavors of black plum, raspberry, roasted beet, espresso. Medium-full bodied with a very smooth finish. Minimal heat despite the 15.5% alcohol. Only shortcoming is that the nose is restrained at this stage. Will hold remaining bottles 6-12 months.

($24) Showing better than it did to my recollection when I last tasted it at the winery in May 2004. Peppery nose with clove and a concoction of tart red berry aromas. High toned on the palate with bright peppery red fruit over lemony acids. Hides its 15.5% alcohol quite well. Again, good, not great, and not really even up to Turley standards in my opinion.

Going from memory, as I had this Saturday night at MidCity Cuisine in Atlanta. $90 @ the restaurant (a far cry from the $20 from the mailing list!) Deep, inky purple black. Reticent nose somewhat grudgingly offered up elements of cola and berry. Rich, unctuous, and creamlike on the palate; lingering finish. Very good full-throttle zin. Paired well with the antipasto platter and chateaubriand for two with tarragon butter.

This is a good example of a basic Turley. It has the ripeness, sweetness, and power; it just lacks the complexity. The nose shows oak, vanilla, dried herbs, and high pitched dark fruit. The palate has loads of tomato skins, char, and a good dollop of acidity. The finish is of medium length. This is still a great value at $20 (from the mailing list).

Tasted at the winery. 15.5% alcohol. Bright disc. Medium ruby robe with red rim. Clean but muted nose, showing hints of plum, raisin and pepper. Full-bodied on the palate, with medium acidity and big sweet tannins. The alcohol gives the mid-palate enough heat to hinder the expression of the fruit. Medium, hot finish. While the wine certainly should have been served in the tasting room at a lower temperature than the approximate 70 degrees that it was served, I find it hard to believe that they presented Robert Parker the same juice that ended up in the bottle that I tasted.

I just got my Turley home on Tuesday, so after 2 days of cellar rest I popped a cork. The nose shows blueberries, oak, graham cracker, and graphite. There is a smidgen of heat. The palate is so thick it is creamlike. It shows flavors of black pepper, red fruits, and vanilla. The finish is a touch harsh. The mouthfeel of this wine reminds me of the 01 Pesenti. The Juvenile, however, does not have the complexity of it older sibling. This is one of the best $20 bottles of wine I have had.

Gorgeous approachable jammy nose, with a full and suprisingly subtle palate, the thinking man's zin, very Ridge like. no real descriptors, but a subtle zin that is a huge buy for 30 bucks.

Had this the same night as the 2002 Old Vines, and the Old Vines won - deeper, more complex and yet also more fruity. Drank with Beth and Terry.

($24) Not exactly rambunctious, but a very good Zinfandel. Sweet clove and red fruit. Touches of higher-toned orange citrus at times. Decent.

Ripe nose of blackberries and raspberries. On the palate, a lively range of plums, black pepper, and dried leaves. Thick, rich mouthfeel. The finish turned a bit astringent.

($24) Paso Robles, Pre HDR: Spicy nose of clove, peppery dry earth. Medium-bodied grapey raspberry fruit. Okay, good even, but not exciting by Turley standards.
