  • Wine, Browns and my 55th Birthday (My Home): Lovely nose of lychees and tropical fruit. On the palate, it is very nice but finished with a classic Gewurtz bitterness than I am not fond of. Other than that, a very pretty wine.

  • A little bitterness shows up in the pallette and a perception of a hot wine even though the alc. doesn't seem to be that high. I prefer Celilo Gewurtztraminers made by Peter to this particular wine.

  • Very light straw color, almost perfectly clear. Good residual sugar, balanced by a spicy mid palate. Very nice.

  • Indian food with Friends: Glass cork. On opening this showed little but after an hour or more, it really blossomed. I know this is young, but was quite surprised how long it took to open. Pale golden in color. The nose at first shows some minerals, but with air, lychees emerge. Full body with a slightly oily texture. On the palate, this is crisp with tropical notes. At first there is a Gewurz bitterness, but that too faded with an hour of air. Very respectable showing.

  • I dare you to find a better Gewurz for the price. Great minerality on the nose, and some weight too. Lemon curd and a little fattiness in the mouth. I mostly think of spicy foods with Gewurz, but this is worthy of the sea bass at local or Tei Tei in Dallas. Couldn't enjoy it more.

  • A couple of 2009 Whites from Sineann: For the most part, I have always told Peter that I found his Gewurtz to lack a certain typicity. We have gone round about this, and with last years model (for whatever reason), I thought they had changed in style for the better. The 2009's are more consistent with previous versions. Since then, however, I have had other Washington/Oregon Gewurz including Sleight of Hands that are in this mold. I will "refine" my argument to say that I prefer the Alsatian style over the Northwest. All that said, this is enjoyable and well made. So what's the difference, at least for my palate?

Light golden in color. The nose lacks the lychees I like, but instead shows lots of minerals (I think of a handful of coins, and also grapefruit rind. Full bodied and slightly oily. On the palate, this is nice with a bitter streak common to Grewurtz. The bitterness is not bad, but I prefer when it co-mingles with a bit of lychee. Dry. Nice finish. No change on Day 2. Glass cork.

If it seems I am being overly harsh on this wine for 88 points, perhaps I am just gearing up for the next late night Drunken discussion with Pete Rosback. I now may have to concede it does it indeed show terroir. The wine is very good and worked better with food.
