  • Concur with everything @Misterstarr said below so no need to repeat much. Bought at auction and it turned up to have a deteriorated capsule fully exposing the cork and a very deteriorated label. I was also shocked how well this held up and still maintained some fine tannins with very little sediment. Mostly tertiary notes but still had some ripe fruit. Amazing that something like this can last so long have give enjoyment 60 years later.

  • “TERRIFIC!

Malescot St Exupery production was minuscule (about 6000-7000 bottles a year) in Margaux, compared to Ch Palmer’s 20,000 bottles a year. So this was technically more legendary than Palmer 61 (many claimed to be 6* wines which I vigorously disagreed).

This has a terrific bouquet of aged dried flowers and potpourri on the nose, so elegant yet sexy. Palate was really superb, had all the weight and boldness of a bodybuilder but not oversized, really pleasant wine that has touched my soul.”

  • The wine faded in the glass far too quickly. Before it was gone, the cedar, tobacco, cigar box and bright red fruits offered were quite nice. But as the wine remained in the glass, the fruit faded and the acidity kicked in. I have had better bottles, however. So, once again, there are no such things as great wine, after 20 years of age, just great bottles. Such is life...

  • This was a gorgeous wine that has not fully shed its tannins nor reached full maturity (although it's close). I was pleasantly shocked how well this held up and has held on to its youth. I had planned on giving this 15-30 minutes to let any funk and vegetal scents blow off. However, at opening, it was mild violets, must, truffle, and raw wood out of the bouquet. So we decanted for sediment (of which there was hardly any) and poured. This was a stunner. It appeared to be dark garnet with no browning, and it was purple at its core. On the attack, there was vivacious red berry and black currant bound up in truffle and game notes with hints of cedar and Worcesteshire. Mouthfeel was medium plus with a surprising remnant of tannin gripping my palate, although it was almost entirely resolved. This particular bottle could have gone 10 more years and likely had a little room for improvement over the next couple years. This bottle was almost a classic margaux, but for the mild and muted floral component and the less delicate texture (which yields great structure). I might have guessed it was a Saint Estephe, but it was a bit too gentle for that. Ultimately, it was fine, sturdy, and almost rustic in comparison to Ch. Margaux I've had from the 50's, but a fine example of a Margaux in its own right. What a great bottle!

  • Dinner at Park Palace with the IT guys (Park Palace): Wow. Definitely a bottle with very good provenance. Deep ruby-red, with just slight bricking at the edge. Very good nose, with secondary aromas intermixing with smoke, cedar, tobacco. The palate showed much younger than its 53-yrs age. Still a lot of (black) fruit intact, great mouthfill - nice freshness, smooth tannins and long. This had more weight than the '61 GPL that I tasted recently but I felt that the GPL still triumphed because of its complexity. A great drink nonetheless. John, thanks!

  • Clearly, exposure to air helped this wine along. After bing popped and poured, the wine started off with canned vegatal aromas and cigar box. 30 minutes later, the wine morped into a tobacco laden, cassis and truffle filled wine with regal, soft, but firm character. This is a wine to seek out at auctions as I suspect it sells for a song, compared to its quality.

  • Mostly 1985 horizontal (Locanda Verde, NYC): From a remarkably pristine bottle with a high shoulder fill. There's a touch of mustiness for the first few seconds and then a beautiful fragrance develops, combining all sorts of mature truffled, smoky, floral, cedary and other savoury elements into a scent that's hard to move away from. It's in that perfect period of maturity where it tastes almost exactly like it smells, incredibly complex and layered showing surprising weight and a wonderfully polished, refined mouthfeel with the flavours resonating long after each sip. Truly amazing and one of my most memorable wine experiences, thanks Chris.

  • Bordeaux 1961 - Mini Horisontal (Le Sommelier, Copenhagen): Beautiful and intense nose with pine needles and black currant leaves that present a very youthful expression. There is also some notes of rust, blood and meat.
The palate has plenty of fresh black currants and it seems young still. There is a little rust in the end with a little blood also.
Very impressive wine that I just adored!!

  • This was from a good bottle of this wine (our group had a second bottle which was not so fresh)...the color on this wine is striking. It actually looks like a wine from the 1980s, rather than 1961. The nose is entrancing - at once powerful and elegant. Somewhat disappointingly, the palate is not up to the nose, but still a very solid and appealing wine. There is some fruit yet, but the wine has mainly gone over to the more cedary and leathery end of the spectrum. This is well and good...we age Bordeaux for a reason - we want it to morph into something different. The wine is not soft by any stretch. One can feel the tensile strength possessed by this wine that allowed it to persevere to age 50. Very nice and very Margaux.

  • Brick color, with scents of dried black cherry, smoke, earth, tobacco and truffle. Concentrated with fleshy textures and the unique texture of truly mature, old wines, the wine finished with spicy, sweet dark and red berries. It was interesting tasting this wine as today, Malescot is on fire. They have morphed into one of the hot new properties to watch in Bordeaux.

  • Ledbury Bordeaux december Decadence: Wow, fantastic colour. Lovely nose, classic left bank cedar, hints of blackcurrant and spice. Very focused. Mineral purity. Smooth, savoury. Lacks some depth and stuffing on mid-palate but lovely finish. Very positive. Very smooth, silly. Lovely. Really lovely. *****
