Really exited about this wine. Have heard a lot lately about the fact that 2003-burghs have tremendous longevity because of the record-warm vintage and the resulting tannic structure of the wines. When I saw this one at my vendor in the '03 vintage, considered by many to be Matrot's most prestigous red, I found out it was time to try a '03 again. Seven years since my last visit with red burgs from this vintage. Back then the late Denis Mortet and his range of village wines were fantastic. Now, at 13 years of age, the vintage is starting to show muscles. A prominent tannic backbone going all the way thru the wine combined with a ripe fruity character gives the wine something almost non-burgundian in style. I really think I would struggle to taste the pinot grape at a blind tasting with this wine. It has almost a more of a Rhone-style, but still has the elegance of Burgundy. Very fascinating. I think I must buy more, for this wine still has years and years ahead of it in the cellar. Very good and balanced despite of all the tannins.

nose has plums and hnts of spice. Quite round mouth with plum fruit, soft earth, and an orange spice black tea finish. This wine is round but no strong acid or heat at the end. I am normally somewhat unhappy with fruit this ripe but the balance and complexity would not have one mistake this for most CA pinots.

Even if out of the wrong glass, and not in the best of (drinking wine) surroundings, it shows it deserves its cult following Still tons of dark fruit aromas left, violets and sweetish spices as well. Mineral and forest floor. Some baroloesq licorice at the end. Fresh. Great structure. Very long. http://bit.ly/oNHuyO

fruit and plum nose. ripe dark fruit and plum fruit with earthy mid-palate, quite a bit of weight and plum finish. Not particularly burgundy like but the fruit is nice, with a long finish and the wine really doesn't appear that heavy and is somewhat balanced with no heat on the finish. Good for the vintage.

Guys' Night Out (Gulfstream - Corona del Mar, CA): Ripe aromas of black cherries, mocha, vanilla and orange peel. A bit overdone in character, but richly textured and a nice mandarin orange finish. Some heat.

Fantasic nose of dark fruit and some sort of spice (clove or cinnamon). Very balanced mouth feel, with a nice balance between fruit and tannins. Complex yet very friendly to drink. I like the structure, as it frames the fruit very well. One of the better 2003s from my limited tasting experience

Garagiste Burgundy Tasting (Seattle WA): Wine tasting. Don't think I've ever seen this wine before in any vintage, so had no clear expectations. Rich black cherry on nose. Concentrated ripe flavors with good minerality and acidity for the vintage. Structure doesn't yet seem 100% in balance so I'd think this will need another 5 years to integrate better, but the raw materials are easily there.

Took four hours to really open up but starting to get nice tertiary aromas of forest floor and mushrooms.

Extremely expressive nose of blackcurrant syrup and vanilla. Very good. Like it! Palate is also powerful and nice. Consistant with last tasting.
