OK Syrah, has evolved since my last bottle. Nose is really nice but the body tends to feel a bit hot and the fruit kind of dips in and out before settling on the red side. I get some iron and menthol on the palate amid that mostly purple fruit that then tarts up a bit and goes to red fruit with some acid into the finish. I don’t think this wine is anywhere near “dead” but it’s not going to benefit from age.

Still very youthful, with a nose of new leather and boisterous black fruit. Rich initially on the palate, blackberry fruit and blackberry tea and Asian spices, and then turning juicy on the finish. I’d say it’s drinking at peak right now, but retaining the structure to go maybe another 10 years. Maybe my favorite Martinelli syrah yet.

Saturday Night New World Double Blind, $40+ (Bin 75): Opaque core with thin bright reddish purple rim; luxurious nose right off the bat, caramel, violets, mint, glycerin, almost black pepper, perfumed; luxurious mouthfeel as well, sweet tart fruit, plush, spice, some prickle from the acid and alcohol, the finish was a bit peculiar; overall I liked this a lot.

So I rarely write tasting notes unless something sticks out about a wine in either an extraordinarily good or odd way. This posting definitely falls into the odd category. Lots of smoke and roasted game on the nose but with something greenish about it (and I have never seen anything green in any martinelli wine I have had). The more I dig into the nose, the more I want to say it reminds me of a smoked salmon or smoked trout. It is like green mesquite meets cedar plank salmon. Now you might think I have already had a few too many based on this review but, alas, this is the first glass of the evening. The wine isn't flawed in a technical sense, just way over oaked and I look back at how my palate has changed in the few years since I purchased this style of wine. Going to enjoy it for what it is sitting outside by a fire so it just fits in as part of the scene!

Lush, fruitful and yet with a degree of salinity and minerality.
