Birthday Sunday lunch (McLeay Street Bistro, Potts Point): From Coravin. Woof, obvious Brett on this bottle - all farmyard and horse shit intially - but with air the other aromas and flavours join in, softening to show saucisson, brambles, leather, meaty and savoury, really good with Chateaubriand and Paris mash. Long.

Lots of blueberries, dense, heavy, extremely concentrated, almost New World style - would have guessed Australia, probably. Needs another ten years (from my cellar, at least)- and then we will have to see - I have my doubts, honestly. #HSA#Bordeaux-night

From Coravin. Blackberry, black pepper, saucisson, a little red currant note though it's ripe, with time some smoked bacon and meaty notes. juicy but thick, dense with blackberry and blackcurrant, tight grippy, drying tannins are plentiful and talc textured, a little caramel on the finish.

Dark red, hint of brown eim. On the bose dark fruit, smoke, sweet liquorice, herbal but fruity. High acidity, very fine and presant tannins, some mature red fruit.
Lovely wine, big and powerful but balanced.

Annual Coravin blitz - day one (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas of blackberry, earth, a little peppery spice, a touch of acetone. The acetone goes to the palate and the fruit is a little wild. Hmm

Recent notes in 2018 capture it well. Very fresh fruit, beautiful Syrah nose. It might improve a bit IMHO, but for me I’ll drink the rest of my bottles over next 2 years

Very dark crimson color, impenetrable at the core.
Expressive and intense nose of smoked meat, tapanade, iodine, black pepper, blackcurrant, and some initial reduction that blew away.
Powerful boysenberry fruit along the long but midweight palate. Good acid gives the perception of very fresh fruit. Ends quite grapey with firm tannins (some from oak influence).
Clearly a richer style of northern rhone but keeps it in enough balance to offer a tasty and interesting drink.

Massive and far too young for consumption. It will be terrific in 3 - 5 years time. Gobs of glycerol and mouthfeel and a bouquet that soared from the glass and decanter. Was barely drinkable at 6 hours, the only wine for decades that defeated me. You really had to be there!!

Opened and allowed to slow ox about 45 minutes before drinking. After opening there was good aromatic character with garrigue, smoke, blackberry jam, and almond notes. On the palate this did not live up to the aromas. Lifeless acidity, very disjointed flavors, and no complexity or evolution on the palate. Peppery and lighter notes of blackberries. Very disappointing and a poor QPR.

Christmas catch up lunch and drinks (E & M's in the rocks, Sydney): Blackberry over peppery spice but quite savoury with a touch of Brett and general funkiness. It's beautifully balanced on the palate - still with youthful though savoury fruit, juicy and fleshy and contained tannins. Eminently enjoyable with BBQ fillet steak and dauphonoise potato.

End of Project Supper 3 (Mere Catherine, Potts Point): blackberry over black pepper, cream slight crushed rock, spice and a certain oak sweetness here as well. It's still a bit young but shows potential…actually, it's a bit out of whack at the mo'. Probably not at it's best here and, on this taste, not a good QPR.

Quite modern, with its espresso, smoke, licorice and black raspberry and jam filled perfume. Rich, round, ripe, forward and already fun to drink, with good levels of concentration and length, this is quite a nice value wine from the Northern Rhone.

Fresh vanilla icecream, violets, wet stones and red and black fruits on the still fairly closed, very fresh smelling nose. Fresh on the sappy palate, with great balance and persistence, clean, mineral-laden, with a core of bright fruit and refreshing acidity. Very young, and very promising.

Sweet fruit and balanced structure with round mouthfeel. A crowd pleaser, but not very solid wine.

Decanted for one hour. Delicious jammy, classic Rhone wine. Surprisingly good. Well balanced tannins and acidity.
