  • 1997 Giorgio Pelissero Barbera d'Alba Piani

This pours medium to light ruby in the glass. The nose is low intensity and low complexity showing relatively unevolved notes of blackberry, black raspberry, alcohol, black licorice, leather, and a touch of sawdust. The palate is fairly angular entering on blackberry, with medium minus tannin and medium acid. The finish goes a little bitter and is relatively short.

  • 1996 Bodegas Alejandro Fernández Ribera del Duero Tinto Pesquera

This pours medium ruby in the glass with light bricking. The nose is of ripe strawberry, dark cherry, leather, cigar wrapper, cigar ash, anise, dill pickle brine, and old furniture. The palate entry is lovely on strawberry and cherry with medium minus tannin and medium plus acid. The finish shows a touch of bitterness but also a lovely cigar ash note. All in all this was a nice showing and certainly an improvement from the last time tasted four years ago. This bottle was pristine with a high fill level, and a good cork. The color was great and if anything the overall profile was in some ways kind of undeveloped. The nose was only moderately expressive, seemingly holding something back a little and the touch of clipped bitterness similarly was a detractor. Yet what this does show is a nice traditional profile, the cigar notes particularly appealing.

  • 2017 Norman Hardie Pinot Noir County

This pours light ruby in the glass. The nose is beautifully red fruited showing red currant, cranberry, green plant leaf, green bean, crushed rock minerality, perfume, and peonies. There is the faintest background hint of plastic but it really is quite hidden. The palate enters on the tart red fruit, with medium minus dusty tannin and medium plus tart and lightly green tinged acid. The finish is medium in length showing leaft green bitterness against whisps of florals and red fruit.
