After an hour of decanting - dark fruits, pepper, mint, black tea and dry, unsmoked cigarettes in the glass. The fumes as they blow off remind me a little of my mother's purse - cough drops, Wrigley's spearmint gum, and old, dusty, loose tobacco. A fair enough value, though a little weak at this price point - I kept wishing the fruit was a little more concentrated.

I found this wine very entertaining. At first sniff, I couldn't help but imagine myself at the bar at my favorite sushi place - a mix of fresh fish, soy, unfiltered sake and the funk of aging refrigeration. Unmistakable, savory umami palate and a velvety spice that takes it clear through the finish like white bean soup or red pepper hummus. 91, +2 as a conversation piece.

I can understand why this is such a crowd-pleaser - when you bring this kind of wine to a dinner party, it's going to stand out from everyone else's oak monsters, because it really is a well-done version of that brawny, luscious merlot style. Really really hot nose, with alluring dark chocolate mocha on the nose. The heat combined with the spice brought to mind the way your hands smell when you cut fresh jalapeno or serrano peppers. Dark fruit overruns the palate, and the finish reminded me of port. It's really not that out of control, I think the alcohol just turned me off. 88, +1 as a good conversation piece.
