  • 1985 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays

I have had this one more than half a dozen times and it never fails to remind me why I'm in love with the Cote d'Or. It is surprisingly consistent for a Burg as all bottles that I've drunk were purchased separately at auction. The wine drinks immediately with that classic bouquet of red fruit, dirt, and mellow wood tannins which only older Burgundies display with subtlety. A finesse wine which requires attention. Color was pale rose with a hint of orange around the edge. One short of Extraordinary because the depth on a great Grand Gru should be soul searching.

Fantastic wine, but bears little resemblance to traditional Rioja. If tasted blind I might have even guessed Cote Rotie. You can pick up similarities to Sr. Romeo's work at Artadi but this is a richer style. This isn't much of a food wine because of the weight and viscosity. There is a good deal of sweetness/sun to it as well Long finish. One of the best Spanish wines I've ever head but paradoxically not very Spanish
