  • 1990 Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir

Found this "forgotten" bottle (stored at 55 degrees since purchase). I really thought it would be way beyond it's prime -- probably not even drinkable (I had a backup bottle ready to go). Much to our surprise this was a delightful wine. Very light red color with a slight tinge of tan on the edges. Cherry, mushroom, damp forest on the nose. It still had a good dose of cherry fruit and wild mushroom on the palate and a very dry mineral, but short, finish. Very enjoyable but probably would have even been better 5-10 years ago.

  • 1995 Saintsbury Chardonnay Reserve

I was doing some spring cleaning in my cellar and came across this along with a dozen other bottles that had been misplaced when I moved many years ago. I didn't expect much and that's what I got. Dark gold in color, a little oxidation but not as much as I would have expected. It smelled a little like Calvados, it even tasted a little like a pear or apple brandy. Not undrinkable but not particularly enjoyable. The lesson: watch your inventory and drink up before it's too late.

  • 2008 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

Very unusual PN, upfront smells a little like a fruity, smoky BBQ sauce! not at all in a bad way. The more typical PN nose of dark cherry, raspberry are there but are a bit hard to find. Not as silky as I expect my Pinots to be, a high acid rather harsh texture that actually worked well with a beef based pasta sauce (not what I would normally pair with a PN). Not a very complex wine nor does it have a long finish, BUT I really enjoy drinking it.
