  • 1986 Château Beychevelle

We have always enjoyed Beychevelle wines and this bottle was no exception. On its 30th anniversary it is still full of fruit and flavor, with a mouth-watering taste and mouth-filling finish. We decanted the wine and let it breathe for about an hour before restoppering it and bringing to a restaurant where we shared it with friends. We all loved this wine. It was still great a couple of nights later when we drank what was left of the bottle -- and compared it with leftovers from a bottle of '86 La Lagune, which we had also opened a few days earlier. No comparison -- the Beychevelle blew the La Lagune away.

  • 1986 Château La Lagune

Although we enjoyed this wine over the years, when we last tasted a bottle in 2011, it was certainly drinkable but the fruit was fading. Now 5 years later, on the wine's 30th anniversary, we found it to fit the same category -- it is still drinkable but it is light on fruit and will not get better. It really is time to drink up.

  • 1986 Château Haut-Bages Libéral

This wine was even more delightful then when we last had a bottle in 2013. Paired with filet mignon. The wine was fruity, full-flavored and very smooth, a delightful drinking experience. Should last another couple of years at least.
