  • 2008 Domaine Bruno Clair Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers

    At the open:
Smells of ripe red cherries, rosemary, and has a cool earthy darkness
Tastes of a hint hidden orange over cherry and raspberry, minerals. Slightly reserved, but mouth coating.

    90 Minutes (decanted):
Smells of wet forest floor, cherry fruit and menthol
Tastes of bright black cherry and spices, developing a stronger weight.

    Medium-full Bodied+

This wine was a masculine delight. It never quite "softens", retaining its savageness throughout, but its confident black cherry fruit and earth are a beautiful, engaging, combination. Perfect with our roasted duck.

  • 2006 Château Léoville Barton

    At the open:
Smells of graphite, spice, star anise, and a hidden bit of concentrated cassis
Tastes of a little green, lean modest red fruit.

    After 1 hour (decanted)
Smells of concentrated dark fruit with a touch of raisin and forest floor.
Tastes of still present but fading green fruit balancing with a light back fruit with convincing minerality and leather.

    After 2 hours (decanted)
Smells of light sweet black fruit and leather (a touch of smoke?)
Tastes of Modest, confident red fruit. Restrained and classic.

    Medium bodied

This wine improved over three hours but stayed true to its classic nature. A “correct” claret. Enjoyable and traditional, but not overly impressive.

  • 2005 Château Figeac

    At the open:
Smells of cold purple and black barnyard fruit with leather lurking.
Tastes of faint green peppers, bitter stems, and a touch of sour red fruit.

    After 1 hour (decanted)
Smells of concentrated dark fruit with a touch of raisin and forest floor.
Tastes of grippy black-red fruit and pine tar/tobacco.

    After 2 hours (decanted)
Smells of sweet red and black fruit.
Tastes of high-toned red fruit with a rich dark complexity.

    Medium-full bodied

This wine went through an incredible transformation over three hours. It evolved from a punch you in the face bitterness to an engaging dark fruit balanced over rich earth. Fascinating and delicious.
