  • 2007 Outpost Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard

2016 Kongsgaard The Judge Chardonnay - My first time tasting this elixir. The nose was somewhat reticent with a hint of lemon. On the palate, there are layers of rich, honeyed fruits, mouth-watering acidity with nice minerality. It’s a mouthful of wine, early in its evolution that I would love to try in 5 years or longer. There’s no rush. 98 pts with upside.

2007 Futo - Double decanted 2 1/2 hours prior to dinner. Ripe, full-bodied and opulent. Beautiful from the word go featuring blueberries and blackberries. Large CF component. Very smooth and great purity of fruit. Right in its prime for me. 98 pts

2007 Abreu Madrona Ranch - The most complex of the three reds we devoured. Wasn’t sure it was going to come around when I first opened it but 90 minutes after double decanting it certainly did. A nice amount of CF I’m sure. It’s black-fruited with a streak of red berries and a hint of spice. Tannins are ripe but firm. It’s great and will stay there for years to come. 98 pts (Do you sense a theme?)

2007 Outpost True Vineyard - Tight at first. I would recommend a 60 minute decant if consuming now. Surely will have the longest life of the three reds. Deep blue and black fruited with nice minerality. A powerful 100% Cabernet and, yes, 98 pts.

While qualitatively very similar, they took turns as WOTN which I found enhanced the experience. Futo out of the gate was on top, then Abreu and the last sips of the Outpost were it’s best. What was surprising to me was that only two of us are big fans of big, rich and ripe (modern) Cabernets. One was decidedly old world and one right in the middle. And yet, we all agreed on these beauties.

3/6/2024 1:57:00 PM - I've been fortunate to know Russell for 10+ years and consider him a friend. Would you mind emailing me at melsdad117@gmail.com so we can chat directly? Thanks!

3/6/2024 1:31:00 PM - Mark, unfortunately most of my contacts are scattered all about the country, with the closest group being in Philly, I think? You'll love the dinner with Bevan! I was fortunate to taste with him and a few other CT'ers at his home a couple of years ago. Quite the character!

2/26/2024 12:22:00 PM - Hey Mark. I've haven't had any of the Bevan wines outside of Ontogeny. Like much of Napa these days, the price point is just bit beyond where I am comfortable. I'm finding much better value these in Di Costanzo, Aperture, Ridge, Rivers-Marie and Old World wines (and if I'm being completely honest bourbon). Also seems to be where my palate is more these days.

2/25/2024 9:07:00 AM - Hi Mark, I have had some Ontogeny in the past but never the single vineyard wines. At the time, the SVDs were a bit out of my price range. Lately I have been focusing on more classically styled wines from Napa so I haven't revisited, but have always heard terrific things about the Tench and Wildfoote.

1/30/2024 6:36:00 PM - Hey Booze - I was fortunate to be at a MacDonald tasting where someone brought the 18 KE Rhada. It was my wine of the year. I'm on the waiting list. I think I'll get an offer this year....maybe. Cheers!

8/15/2023 6:34:00 PM - Hey melsdad. Great to see a fellow NJ wine lover. I went very hard during COVID on wines that I felt I liked (Carter, Myriad, basically anything Mike Smith) to find out that's not really where my palate is at! That's not to say in the least that they are not very well-made wines, just a different style. Since then, I've gravitated towards Di Costanzo, Dunn, Ridge and I've been lucky enough to be on the mailing list at Kinsman Eades. I guess cooler climates is a relative thing as those producers source from mountain fruit or down closer to the bay, but by comparison it's all warmer than Bordeaux. Thanks for the add!

2/9/2017 12:50:00 PM - Nice cellar! I see you like Bevan's wines. I'm going to a dinner next week where a friend is bringing your "namesake". Not sure which vintage. Cheers! Mark

2/9/2017 10:07:00 AM - I just friended you as you did me on Cellar Tracker. I reviewed your wine cellar and we have a lot of the same wines. I live in Mountainside not far from Montclair. I'll open up my wine cellar for you to review. Interestingly I just drank my last 1997 Bryant Family a few weeks ago and it was terrific.
