  • 2002 Zind-Humbrecht Gewurztraminer Hengst

Tasted with 16 current and former Dan Murphy's wine colleagues and their partners at an degustation dinner at Espisito in Cartlon (Melbourne) on 24th Sep 2012. Unanimously voted WOTN against some very stiff competition. Though the wine was deep yellow/Gold in colourit still showed vitality and freshness on the palate - however I would definitely drink this within the next 12 months as its at its likely best. Unctuous, textural and complex with layers of flavour. The alc is high at around %15 but this manages it well. A surprising match for roasted kid wrapped in pancetta with cumquats. Delicious. Thank you to Mark Samaha from Langton's Wine Auctioneers for bringing it along.

  • 1999 Yarra Yering Dry Red N°1

A lovely bottle of Yarra Cabernets just finding its groove. An hour into the Decanter and this was only just starting to unfurl. Pristine cassis and undergrowth, perfectly poised. This will continue to age gracefully over the next 5-10 years providing pure drinking pleasure. Classic, medium-weighted, finely structured Cabernet from one of the Yarra's deserved legends. A lovely drink - I reckon this will deserve one or two more points over the next few years.

  • 1981 Tyrrell's Sémillon Vat 1

Tasted at Sage restaurant in Canberra MON 14/11/2011 courtesy of fellow judge Andrew Spinaze (chief winemaker Tyrrells wines) along with other judges in the Dan Murphy's National Wine Show including Neal Martin and Lisa Perotti-Brown MW from erobertparker.com WHITE WINE OF THE NIGHT for me. An aged Hunter Semillon at its pinnacle (though showing no signs of fading). Toast dripping with artisan butter and lime marmalade. A wine I could swim in - uber luscious. Hunter Semillon is Australia's Burgundy and Tyrrell's Vat 1 is Grand Cru. Bottles are extremely rare and being under cork randomly good - we can only imagine a future for the style under screw-cap - thank you again to Andrew for the privilege of being able to taste this treasure and for the opportunity to judge under your guidance as an associate this week.
