This came out of that cellar I worked on over the summer. Had it at dinner last night in a fave restaurant. On the advice of the Maitre d' we did not decant. Beautiful color, still very vibrant ruby, maybe only a tiny trace of orange at the rim. Dried red fruit and leather, tobacco and spice in the nose, no heat whatsoever. The nose echoed through on the palate as well, dried red cherry and soft tobacco and leather notes, quite dry as my dad was quick to point out, soft tannins with just a hint of sweetness, long finish. Seemed to be at it's peak and it went so fine with the lamb preparation I had for dinner.
I've had this wine young in the '99 vintage and moderately old, drank the '98 vintage in '03. I love it for being one of the tastier italian syrahs out there and yet I don't hear about it much.

Did everything right. Decanted an hour before drinking. Consumed it with the right food (wild mushroom and smoked duck risotto). The wine gives excellent return on the purchase price, under $30.00 as I recall, for an inexpensive barolo. Medium to dark ruby, red and blue fruit on the nose, velvety but youthful tannins and very bright acicity. It's a young, inexpensive, but well made barolo that drinks well now and should age gracefully for the next 5+ years.

At this point I'm ok with blaming the glass. The wine comes on alive and vibrant after opening the bottle. Primarily red fruits with a hint of smoke, earth, and leather, but it got very simple after fifteen minutes and there was no real complexity to the wine at all. Big fruit but no layers. I acknowledge the fact that the stemware was less than adequate. Shallow bowl and no real room for the aroma to expand. I have tasted this shortly after it was released and expected much more, so I will examine it more carefully next time.
