Delicious! Medium amber. Rich, concentrated and slightly viscous, but in a good way. Slightly oxidized, and almost savory, with notes of toasted bread, honey, spices, stone, flint. Very complex. It has evolved beautifully in 16 years.

Still young with many years to go. But after 1 hr decant and another hr in bottle, it drank very well. Great nose, soft tannins, nice cherries and earth on the palate. Fantastic finish with the minerality I love and a hint of saline. Glad I have another to see the evolution.

Was in the mood for a big Cab last night, so I broke out a 2012 Shafer Hillside Select. It’s a great vintage and with a 2 hour decant was in a perfect place. I was actually expecting a bigger in your face Napa fruit profile, but this HSS was surprisingly mellow. With silky smooth tannins, great balance and integration, the dark fruits were prominent on the nose and palate. There were notes of tobacco, spice and graphite and the finish was nice and long. A truly great wine.
