  • 2015 Chappellet Malbec

Deep dark black cherry colors, this one was darker than expected – strong concentrated nose of dark red and black fruits with a hint of hot black tea (inviting) – on the palette wild ripe blackberry, dark chocolate – tannins were firm, but not too firm – lingering finish was interesting for a Malbec with a mouth feel that begs for another sip - this was a Pnp, but will try a decant the next time.

Not a lot of experience with Malbec, but this one made me want to try more. Enjoyed the bold flavors, structured mouth feel and long finish – I like it.

Paired with a green egg grilled rib-eye (as a Malbec should be) at the home front in Virginia Highland, Atlanta with great friends. Good wine for the money.

    91% Malbec, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon - 14.5% alc. - $65

  • 2006 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Bright ruby cherry colors, not as dark as I would have expected – oaky, graphite, blackberry, dark plum and bold coffee aromas – hint of vanilla dark cherry – same on the palette - added dark plum combined with well integrated tannins - an hour decant (maybe should have been a bit longer)

This is was an enjoyable, silky smooth wine – finish was medium with lingering green pepper, spice and vanilla – was good both by itself and with food. I am a fan of Silver Oak as this is the wine that got me into wine.

Paired very nicely with a rib-eye and green egg blistered peppers and great friends at the home front in Virginia Highland, Atlanta.

    81% Cab Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 5% Cab Franc, 3% Petit Verdot - 14.1% alc. - $108
