  • 2015 Viña Cobos Cabernet Sauvignon Bramare Marchiori Vineyard

Aerated and decanted x 3 hrs. This wine presents in the glass a deep inky plum, almost black. Tasted prior to decanting and got high alcohol and some stewed fruit on the finish. After decanting however, this wine began to show very nicely. Blueberries and menthol are evident in the nose. On the palate jammy blueberry compote, along with plums and black currants. Initially this wine seemed slightly overcooked, but with decanting it's elements are more harmonious. It continues to exhibit muted acid. Tannins are soft fine and rounded. Mouth feel is lush, with a long echoing finish carrying on for 20+ seconds. Overall impression: a delightful, if not overly complicated fruit bomb. Elements of high quality are evident, but the fruit is just a bit too ripe for the finesse one would hope for in a bottle of this price. Still, a delicious experience that is very enjoyable as long as one accepts it for what it is. -92 pts

  • 2016 Domaine les Hauts de Mercurol Crozes-Hermitage

Aerated and decanted x 3.5 hours. In the glass this wine is a deep ruby in color. On the nose floral and herbaceous notes as well as dark fruit notes. On the tongue, black current and plums, followed by leather and licorice, as well as some subtle savory notes. Acid was slightly muted, with well integrated fine soft tannins. Mouthfeel is focused, and body is light but not too thin. Medium finish. Overall impression: this is a lovely, if somewhat straightforward, example of northern Rhone syrah. I found that overall the words gentle and lush both came to mind as descriptors, though this is not generally how I would normally characterize a wine of this style. Should continue to develop in the bottle for anther 3-5 years. ~91 points

  • 2015 Domaine Lucien Lardy Moulin-à-Vent Les Thorins

Aerated and decanted x 2hrs. This wine is bright red in the glass. On the nose a heady bouquet of red fruit, with green vegetal notes. On the palate, fresh juicey strawberries, red raspberries and tart cherries, with an undercurrent of white pepper and a refreshing minerality. Acidity is bracing but balanced by tannins that remain grippy yet not overwhelming. Finish is medium, with lingering strawberry and cherry notes. Overall impression: this wine represents a truly lovely expression of pure gamey, and an excellent QPR. Drink now or hold for another 3-5 years. ~92 points.
