  • 2008 Tenuta dei Pianali Bolgheri Coronato

    Drank at home.

So good after drinking French and new world, almost exclusively for six months, to have a bottle of Italian. Bold, nicely structured and with the Italian spice (must be Cab Franc). I forget how much I love Italian Super Tuscans - and nearly all other varietals too - so will now have a phase of mucho Italiano! Yum.

  • 1985 Château Haut-Brion

    Drank at home

As a lover of HB, the weight of the palate was a supreme disappointment on this occasion. Having had the Ch. Margaux ‘85 a week before, this was not comparable. The nose: too smoky. The palate: too thin. But there is so much loitering that means business which makes me think I might’ve had a slightly subpar bottle. Though that, in and of itself, is a shame, it does mean there’s reason to believe the next bottle of this mighty wine might will shine through.

  • 1978 Château Latour Grand Vin

    Drank at 67PM

Enjoyed with three others which, politely, is two too many with Latour. This stuff is seriously good, even in vintages in which ‘good wine cannot be made’.

Quality and secondary fruit from the outset which was smothered in the second hour with a leathery, farmyardy funk but with a solid undercurrent of cassis and a remaining hint of violets throughout.

I keep finding myself drawn more and more to Latour. It’s probably a common Achilles Heel in the wine world.
