  • 2012 Wittmann Westhofener Kirchspiel Riesling Großes Gewächs

Deep straw, verging on gold. Brilliant, and clearly aged. Fantastic nose: red apples, grape and lemoncurd, a whiff of vanilla, and some beautiful mineral tones of slate and petroleum. Smells almost like a sweet wine without botrytis. The attack on the palate, however, is bone dry. Lots of apples and citrus up front, high acidity that makes for a salivating mid-part filled with orange, citrus, red apples and slate. Almost tannic on the finish, still with lots of life. The aftertaste is long, bone dry, and marked by citrusy and petroleum tones. Remarkably young in the mouth. This has really only started to age, and I guess that the mineral tones will become clearer in five years or so. I have been bit skeptic towards the aging potential of dry Rieslings, but this wine clearly reduces that skepticism. Beautiful wine.

Quite light ruby with notes of brown, seems a bit aged. The nose is also veerging on tertiary tones with tobacco, warm earth/bricks and cedar, but also with a fine and fresh chery tone. Medium to full bodied attack, sweet cherry fruit up front that soon gives way to a more heady and tannic mid palate. The dry mouthfeel weakens after a short while, lettting a fresh, almost raspberrry tone emerge on the finish. The aftertaste is long, fresh and raspberry-like. Very elegant. A fascinating wine that combines a rather brutal dryness with a fresh fruit in the aftertaste that is almost reminiscent of a good, simple burgundy. Not for cellaring, but who knows, this wine has an axcellent trackrecord for aging.

  • 2016 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Deidesheimer Langenmorgen Riesling

Deep straw color, verging on golden. Cleraly aged. Very expressive nose dominated by green apples, lime, some baked lemon, and a clear streak of oil and petroleum. Both elegant and heavy at the same time. Full bodied attack, lots of fruit up front, lime, lemon, pineapple and a smoky touch that reminds me a bit of botrytis (?). The mid palate is super-fresh with an almost tannic feel to it. Lots of excotic fruit and lime that follows in to along, fresh and pteroleum tainted finish where that smoky touch reemerges in the aftertaste. Lingers for almost a minute. A very serious wine that maybe is a bit heavy and fruit driven for a GG fro this area. Still a great wine that has evolved nicely and will keep for many years. It will probably become even more “heavy”, but maybe also more mineral. Super with sushi.

11/2/2023 7:23:00 AM - I had just bought a six-pack of Chateau Beaucastel 2020, and was looking for notes on Cellartracker. Then your note came up. It was, dare I say. quite different from the average note on this site. I found the note funny, literate, and quite in line with my reflections upon certain wines. Even though I'm not a fan of Australian wines (I'm a European chauvinist) your views are refresshing. Keep up the good work.

11/1/2023 2:09:00 PM - Welcome aboard the Crazy Train, dagij! I had a quick look at your more recent notes and it looks like we have some wines in common, especially German Rieslings. I thought your comments on some of the 2016's reflected very accurately on the strengths and weaknesses of that vintage. If I may ask, what got you to board the Rote Kappelle Crazy Train?
