Fantastic. Still on the rise but a number of years from its peak. Tasted it right after a 1985 Chabot Vineyard, which was still very good but on the fade. There are still tannins to be resolved, but once that happens this will be sublime. Has a much more “cherry-vanilla” style than other Chabots but has classic flavor profile nonetheless.

Delivers a singular but powerful message, although now with the wisdom of age. Still has plenty of time left. It now seems to be shaking off the last bit of tannin, which is in that phase which makes for a bit of a dusty finish. Otherwise, probably would warrant a higher score. Paired really well with a tomato basil risotto.

I bought a half-case of this wine when it was released and opened one bottle. It was so backwards, I decided not to open another for at least 10 years. Well, I just opened one last night and what a disappointment! The searing tannins have not faded much. I suppose there's fruit behind that impenetrable wall of tannins but it couldn't be coaxed out even with long decant. I doubt this wine will ever deliver pleasure, but maybe it will soften with more time.
