I appreciate JZEBRACK perspective and honest notes on this Chardonnay because $80 is a steep price with mountains of options out there…
Sight: medium gold at the least a brilliant color!
Nose: Lots of yellow citrus and ripe apples and I get a good depth of richness from the quality french oak which imparted some cinnamon and subtle French vanilla.
Taste: this wine has a great texture from the French oak and good richness but somehow is light on its feet… the acid is medium plus (quite high) and really keep this Chardonnay balanced and bright.
Overall: I want people to understand having been to the estate talking with the winery, being on the wine list drinking lots of Cali wine… yes I agree with JZEBRACK he is right call it what it is even in such a good cooler vintage the wine over boast itself a little. I can get three sticks, Ramey Ritchie, 97pt Kistler Laguna ridge or Fort Ross Sea view/ Sangicomo Chard that easily has more depth and complexity. But I must say the simplicity and precision of Joseph Phelps Pastorale always brings me back… I just love this Chard so it really is up to the drinker sometimes I think value doesn’t matter, it’s just what you like to drink.

Absolutely nothing wrong with this wine. It is aging and modifying its taste characteristics as one would expect. And we like Phelps. We are long term members of their wine club. But we have to call it like it is. This bottle is significantly overpriced. Just simply nothing about the bottle that elevated it to justifying its price point.

Nice semi-balanced - but leans on tart acidic side. Bright clear yellow hue. Beautiful nose of lime zest, nutmeg, and light cream. Starts light citrus, builds to strong lemon/lime with hints of green apple. Bright finish with nice light cream note. Hangs on palate with citrus note

Very burgundian with a healthy acidity but despite that showing it’s cali heritage with a creamy texture
