Having cut my teeth on Petite Sirah with Ridge's super 1984 York Creek (with all of it's volatile acidity and foxiness flaws), I have come to expect high extraction and power from any PS of repute.
Tonight I compared a 2006 and this 2010 PS from Ridge. Wow. Ridge has not kept up with the power concept of California PS.
The 2006 was dead-in-the-water...really no life or substance. The 2010 had some life, and was balanced, but offered no focused power. No perceivable extract, some blackberry character, but nothing to keep up with a rich meal.
Perhaps if this were drunk at 3-4 years of life there would be more vitality, but that is NOT what PS should be about. A 10-year-old PS should just be coming into it's own--tons of tannic blackberry velvet should be evident.

Did not bother decanting this at 14 years of age. Had been kept in 55 - 59 degrees cellar since release. This was an extraordinary sensory experience....it was as if the wine was not even liquid---as if my tongue were suddenly immersed in raspberry cream foam!!! Weightless....without tannin, any edges or distractions. Truly a unique wine experience. Followed a '90 Jaboulet La Chapelle and and '98 Grange.....but this was WOTN for its uniqueness! I have had hundreds of Turleys, but nothing this old.

Easy to see why many do not feel this wine special…tight minerality, slightly high acids, and fine tannins still unresolved…but for me, this just means that another 3 years and this wine will be singing. The diverse varietal blend works, in that the complexity of flavors gives quite a harmonious red/black/blue fruit impression. No complaints--money well spent for a wine with modest expectations.
