Still young but super lovely already. A powerful aromatic collection of citrus, honey, white peaches, ripe apples, flowers. Electrifying and racy sharp acidity with a strong mineral backbone and profile of salinity that cleanses the fruit and sweetness at the start. An absolute delight with a range of food from vegetables, salads, pickles, risotto, grilled black cod, to citrus based desserts.

The cork was dry and broken upon extraction, which was very odd considering it was purchased from a reputable wine shop and cellared properly on its side ever since. The wine luckily was fine, and approachable. No decanting and was ready to be enjoyed. Wonderful signature pungent profiles of seashore, oyster shells, Parmesan cheese rind, grounded almond paste, flowers. For a warm vintage the fruit was not as vibrant with mostly lemon and green apple. In a short period of time, oak notes started to dominate but was overall well controlled and elegant. But shortly thereafter the oak became pervasive in a less controlled way, that eventually faded with time, but came back again once the glass was topped while the bottle was in the ice bucket. I don’t know, the oak / refined pastry cream notes seemed a bit too Côte d’Or like during sporadic moments and affected the pairing with food. In comparison, I think Dauvissat handles 1er cru in 2018 much better and in a more balanced style that I prefer. For now I think the village 2018 is more enjoyable than Montmains 2018. I am not so sure this will fare better with more age.

Tasted from a coravin'd bottle and directly into a glass. Aromatic medley of ripe sweet fruit from raspberries, strawberries, cherries, blackberries with a dusty kind of floral perfume, with enough acidity and a small touch of astringency to match heavier proteins quite effortlessly. In this case quite apt with a duck leg confit. The nose reminded me of Assiduous Cabernet Sauvignon Bates Ranch Santa Cruz.

8/29/2022 9:12:00 AM - Hello VincentMorey, I think it is a good idea to wait for at least another 3 years with your bottle of 2017 Close de Maltroie before opening it.
Will be interesting to read your tasting note then...
Cheers
