  • 1995 Château Pontet-Canet

Another encounter with this glorious mature beauty. This bottle exhibited a high neck level and cork in perfect condition. Aroma and flavor notes consistent with my last review. On this occasion, the wine was followed for 10 hours; remaining impressively intact until the fruit finally began receding at the 12 hour mark. While it is totally possible that this wine could be 5 years past its peak, this bottle leads me to believe that well preserved examples should easily remain at this drinking plateau for another 5 years. All in all, a delicious example of mature Bordeaux, of which unfortunately, I only have one bottle left. I am however putting my money where my mouth is and will seek to purchase additional bottles of this wonderful wine.

  • 1983 Château Rieussec

Drunk very chilled and paired with foie gras. I have had this wine three times in the last few months and it has been consistently voted the wine of the night by everyone present. This bottle was no exception. Displaying a burnt caramel color, it is the most evolved Sauternes in my cellar. Wonderful nose of apricot marmalade and orange peel. Stunningly complex nectar, gorgeously long, with a slight residual acidity. Heavy bodied and powerful, without being cloying. Spectacularly flamboyant finish. A truly memorable bottle.

  • 1993 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon

First in the lineup of our wine group dinner. Paired with shellfish to start the meal. Slightly dark, pale, yellow color with tiny bubbles. A late harvest type of character and tropical fruits on the nose. Buttery, with wonderful notes of caramel and a hint of truffles. The wine should be drunk quickly, as it became flat after 30-45 minutes, at which point it transitioned to a glorious glass of white wine. A memorable experience.
