Bafflingly mace and nutmeg heavy on opening, little else. Eventually opens up with leather, strawberry and an almost Barolo like tar. Bitter chocolate on the finish. Returning five hours later, I see little improvement. Clearly opened very early but even so, very unforgiving and rather lacklustre.
(Before you all have a strop, I use much more of a score range than your redundant 89-95)
Fantastic bouquet and palate. Obviously still quite closed, but still enjoyable as tannins are finely grained with some sweetness, a bit oaky but by no means overdone to my taste. Prefer the Poyferre 2019 slightly, inkier and fruitier, this is a bit more „modern“ and spicier. Currently like to drink young Bordeaux every once in a while but would wait at least 5 years if you want a more mature, refined experience.

Balanced, evolving in glass with a beautiful texture of black cherry and vanilla notes. The cork had a beautiful smooth vanilla note to it and portended things to come. We rate this wine a 93 tonight, but I really feel in time everything will come together for a much greater experience. Hold for 5-7 years.

I have to put first that I'm a big fan of Pape Clement, but I only had bottles of the 80's, 90's and 2001-2004 (2003 is one of my all time favorites). I like the style. But if this one is representative for the "new style", I won't buy any of the younger vintages. This is a modern wine, but in a bad way. Heat and burnt sugar all over the place. The tannins are very drying, you can't even describe if there is some fruit on the palate. Some might say that it could be muted. I don't think so because I've bought plenty of different 2019's and tasted many of them to have an over-all-impression. Cork was in good condition so there is no reason to think that some "circumstances" are responsible for the, let's say, average taste! 87-88 pts. for the structure, but not more! Very bad P/Q by the way... PS: I left 1/2 of it in the cooled bottle for the next day but: no improvement...
