  • 2017 Kilikanoon Shiraz Meymans

Dark red. Sharp red fruit hits the nose first then there's a dash o blackcurrant. Shirazy black pepper tannins. Fulsome flavours, tannins are present but have softened, dry, a support of red fruit acidity, black fruit, quite simple and ok.

Bob's cellar. Dark red, no bricking at all. Blackberry, damson, red earth and ironstone nose, sweet and still has a youthful air. Eucalyptus and tannic opening, still dry, fruit is reticent on PnP basis. Powerful and big compared to the Latour, certainly not the same level of sophistication. Rich and spicy.
Day 2, knitted together better, the eucalyptus, ironstone, red earth and Australian bush is more distinct. Nice but I prefer the Edelstone.

  • 1994 Château Latour Grand Vin

Bob’s cellar. A good looking ruby red, no bricking at all. Pnp, nose is a blast of barnyard funk, red acidity and ascending dark fruit, grip, unsmoked cigar leaf and very good depth. Taste is restrained at this early stage, supremely fine, there are no jagged edges here. It’s dark fruit balanced with a perfect acidity, tannins are just there without being obtrusive, it’s calm and collected and as the air opens up you can feel the depth beckoning you over to be involved. It’s very very good, undoubtedly excellent. Am going to allow this to breathe for a while before the next glass.
Couple of hours later this has closed up. Still sublimely textured but redder acidity and flatter. Not to say still astounding quality still. Day 2, a glass with a Montecristo No2 on the terrace. Beautiful and taut, tannins are lacy and precise, red fruit is round and beautiful, ties in nicely with the cigar - brings out the forest floor and cigar box. Tremendous.

2/9/2024 8:23:00 PM - I am manfully working my way through the cellar. It's a tough job but someone has to do it...!

2/6/2024 3:35:00 PM - Thanks for your generous comment on the note I did on the '21 CK SV. I still wonder if the review may have been 'balanced and incisive' and yet also just wrong. Sometimes I think my winery, if I had one would be best called 'Clutching at Straws' or 'Chasing Shadows'. Hope you are still making steady progress through your father in law's cellar. Fight the good fight!

4/5/2023 5:06:00 AM - Hi Rote, good to be here, and I do enjoy your meanderings. Bob was my father in law who passed away 3 years ago. He loved and collected wine for over 40 years so he left his daughters (and me!) an amazing cellar of aged wines. I am slowly working my way through a chunk of it...the rest was sold

4/4/2023 3:27:00 PM - Welcome aboard the Crazy Train, Cremuel and hope you get some value from my meanderings. The Bob to whom you refer in your notes strikes me as a generous type! I like your notes - nice and compact, accurate and good info.
