Sometimes the quality of a wine lies simply in how easily it goes down. This was very well balanced, sweet black fruit, a touch of mint and a smooth finish. It wears its 14.5% alcohol very lightly. We enjoyed this with a slow roast leg of lamb with figs and pistachio.

Garnet red appearance with black cherry nose. In the mouth, more cherries, a touch of some red berries, a little oak and some leather. Very smooth and long finish with a touch of something cool that is almost Cabernet-like and also a little spice. We drank this with an Italian beef stew made with a basic Barbera D'Asti, lemon and thyme roast potatoes and baked beetroots; it was somewhat predictably a great match but there is undoubtedly enough to this wine to deal with heavier dishes.

I was not expecting much, or indeed, anything as this was one of those bottles that has been lurking in my cellar for way too long. First impressions were positive, it smelled distinctly fruity with a touch of leather. Decanted (throwing a heavy sediment) it was a deep garnet colour with pale garnet at the edges in the glass. Soft forest fruits, autumn leaves, a touch of raisin, balsamic and leather. Really rather nice but definitely for drinking up if you have a bottle that has been lucky enough to last. I had it with Italian stewed pork with porcini and juniper berries.
