Domaine Weinbach Gewurztraminer Furstentum GC Vendanges Tardives 2008, purchased at WineBid.com,Pa without US warning labels, so probably directly imported by a Weinbach lover. Served at Joel and Sally Goldberg's pre-MoCOOL do for out-of-towners, at a spectacular picnic August 14 in which Rhône wines were expressly forbidden, but unfortunately broken up by lightning and rain. $53/750 ml.
Pale white peach color; 11 percent alcohol shown by its tears. Orange peel scents mixed with peach predominate, but are expressed very harmoniously.
Powdered sugar and lychee show on the palate, with an Auslese-level sweet Fridayness, but still not too sweet for picnic food. Not a trace of bitterness on the luscious finish.
I find Gewurz VTs from Weinbach to be one of the most astonishingly good summer picnic wines in existence, and remember a magnum once being polished off by 6 people.
