Pop and pour. Back-up wine at a tasting. Developed nose, tobacco, tealeaves, dried spices. Plenty of life in this. Ripe, fine grained tannins in finish. Medium length. Not a very complex wine, but performs beautifully well tonight. Drinking very nicely now at an impressive age. Perfect with confit of duck and mushroom risotto.

Wow! Can't believe how well this wine showed this evening. Totally unlike any of the prior bottles of this, or any other vintage, of the Bucerchiale Vineyard.Nor like any other "regular" bottlings from Selvapiana. The wine's color showed its age with an orange rim with classic bricking. But the color was still very dark throughout the rest of the glass. Nose of lead pencil, tar, and deep dark red berry. The palate was vibrant and long. Dark red berry flavors with a nice earthy component. We clearly either drank the numerous other bottlings that we've had over the years too young, or just didn't hit the sweet spot in their evalution. If you hold ony of these '98s in your cellar, and they've been stored well, I urge you to give one a try soon.

A bit of reduction on opening, but that blew off quickly. Lots of sangio character. Still plenty of tannic grip but definitely coming into the sweet spot of the drinking window. Secondary notes just starting to develop. Really nice.

March 08. First 2 of 12 bottles. My notes say still strong tannins, wonderful fruity bouquet, wait 2 yrs for next bottle, "french-bordeaux" style. I guess it corresponds to old world style mentioned b4.
