See previous notes. Hazy. Garnet in glass, bordering on tawny. Medium plus intensity on the nose. Sour cherries, barnyard funk and cotton candy. Complex with good acidity.

Brief note written from memory. Under screwcap. Perhaps bottle variation, but this bottle seemed a little advanced and a touch funky (not in a good way) and unhygenic. Having said that, in its earthy, dried herbs and savoury, slightly rusty style, with dried and fresh red berries and cherries, it wasn't without charm. Interesting and fully accessible. With bright acidity, it paired well with food. At year 8, it should be cruising but, on this evidence, I'd be drinking in the next few years.
Pale purple in glass. Medium plus intensity on the nose. Smoke, earth, floral, and spices. Medium acidity and finish. Quite the unique, complex new world pinot.

2019 Visit to North Canterbury, NZ: The first of the two iconic Home Vineyard pinots. From a very steep, exposed north-facing slope, at 350 metres above sea level, higher and sandier than the others with only 20% clay and 3-7% active limestone. The coarse, shallow soils are said to promote aroma in this cuvée. No whole bunch. A maximum of about 10% new oak only. A lighter, more garnet colour than the Earth Smoke. Dry brushwood, tobacco, warm earth, dried earth, crushed dried herb, red currant and other, mainly red fruited, perfumes. Quite savoury. Also more red fruited on palate than the Earth Smoke. Savoury with fresh, direct acidity. Dried brush, earth, minerals and tobacco. Lighter on its feet - and less concentrated - than the Earth Smoke.

Savoury, leafy, red fruit, with structure and balance
Oh my, really good.
Value, not quite for the price.
But a worthy of a once off try
