  • The evening got long and this was in a flight with Krug Collection 1988 and Dom Ruinart 1988. For me it was edging a quite tight and very brute Krug here and possibly on par to slightly behind a wonderful Dom Ruinart 1988. I probably preferred the Dom Ruinart for its generosity but it felt the PR 88 was excellent, very precise, symmetric and possibly has a lot of years in the tank and has not peaked.

  • (Disgorged in 2008, 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Chardonnay)
This is one of few bottles I have left of this excellent cuvée that I bought in 2009 from the house and kept in my cellar since then.. Still good pressure with lots of fine bubbles left and showing that lovely golden yellow colour that is so amazing for a 30 years old bottle. Amazing on the nose showing butterscotch, saltiness and flowers in a very lovely and seductive way. Palate is showing some oxidative notes, but still feels very fresh and well balanced with a good acidic mid and a lengthy finish showing grapefruit bitterness in a very lovely way. As the bottle is finished I’m speechless, just thinking of how good it was.. Wow!
This will keep for many years to come, but is just amazingly right now!

  • The best 88 Champagnes from 1988 Part 2/3; 10/20/2018-10/21/2018 (L'assiette champenois): Some oxidative notes but with good length and precision, maybe a touch over his peak. 92-93

  • Understand that this is the last vintage of Pol Roger's Reserve Speciale produced. Entirely replaced by the Winston Churchill after the 88 vintage.
Opened on New Year's Eve. A beautiful golden yellow. Very nice balance with a fine mousse and still good freshness with citrus, peach, yeast, pain grille and a touch of nuts. Unfortunately also a slightly oxidized note which did not disappear with more air - this bottle should have been drunk a few years ago.
Disregarding the slight oxidization, am rather surprised by the extremely high scores here, this is a very nice Champagne but does not have the complexity in my eyes to score above 92 or so. Drink up.

PS: To my surprise the 1/3 left in the bottle, closed with the original cork and put in the fridge overnight, tastes at least as good 24h later. Was expecting the Champagne to be entirely oxidized but even the faint, oxidized notes from the day before have disappeared. Good length on finish but I stick to the 92 score given the moderate complexity on the palate.

  • My earlier note applies here as well. An extra point because it strikes me as particularly fine and elegant for a pinot noir dominant champagne.
