  • The previous note shows how different a wine can be with the factor of time. Five years ago Venice Al definitely described a completely different wine. I smell no pickles at all on this.

This is a light colored red with beautiful earthy aromas, with raspberry, cranberry intertwined with forest floor and raw wood. On the palate it is silk, dry, fresh, red fruited and lively. Acid is bright, tannins are fully resolved and the texture is ethereal. The finish is long and it leaves mineral notes with hints of cedar. Lovely, lovely bottle. A lot better than the '99 Givry we had a few days ago. This is at the peak of maturity but should linger there for a few years. I would pop now. It is delicious.

  • Disappointing! From perfect storage. Medium garnet with light cranberry rim- no bricking. High pitched nose is overwhelming dill pickle- with some red raspberry, cherry, and tobacco. Palate is somewhat better as red fruit is present, fading oak and tobacco finish, which I like. Air definitely improves the wine for a bit - as the pickle fades and some brined mineral appears on the finish. Burgundy is so fickle! High highs and many disappointments - reminds me of my girlfriend at 27!!!

Rockss and Fruit

(Potel Volnay "Clos de la Chappelle") This was not bad but was not very good either. Pretty boring nose of red fruits and maybe even a hint of overripeness. Good concentration but the fruit did not really have clarity and there wasn't much minerality. This was acceptable yet boring.

(Nicolas Potel Volnay 1er Cru “Clos de la Chapelle”) Nose of briary fruits, rapberries, currants, dusty earth, fresh mint leaf. Thick on the palate with super ripe fruit and a clingy mouthfeel. Very deep and layered with a palate staining finish. Long finish of dark cherries and spice. Shows incredible complexity on the finish. The oak is woven very nicely into the rest of the wine. Very long. Man, this was showing beautifully today.
