Dark amber. On the nose, furniture polish, orange peel and something slightly dusty, like an old wardrobe. The palate is full, round and slightly sweet as you'd expect for a boal but in that lighter playful Barbeito style. It reminds me sweetened iced tea. The finish is dry with a lingering hint of barley sugar sweetness but it lacks that acidity and sharp finish that I crave in a Madeira. A nice boal but seems to lack a bit of character - too mellow almost. I think the 20yr Sercial is a much more distinctive (and better) wine at this stage and while this is nice, it lacks personality.

Madeira Pilgrimage; 2/1/2016-2/4/2016 (Madeira): Smells like wood varnish and tart oranges. Rich and full but stays quite bright, too. I get yellow plums, baked apples and sweet floral tea. This doesn’t strike my palate as much as the Sercial and Verdelho Ribeiro Reals, but it’s still an impressive effort.

Aromas and flavors of dark dry apricots, orange peel, clove. Hints of marjoram. A long finish as one would expect. Good acidity on the palate. A nice madeira and a relative value. Bottled May 2014, Boal with some old Tinta Negra blended in.

This is a new release. 85% bual and 15% 100-year-old tinta negra. Very spicy on the nose as a bual ought to be. Fruity but on the dry side of things. Quite enchanting. Strangely, this doesn't show its age at all, likely from the deliciously fresh acidity. Incredible spice character.
