An elegant Syrah, not showing many signs of age except perhaps in its harmonious melding of components. There’s still brightness to the blackberry and plum fruit, and nice hints of olive. Drinking wonderfully.

I thought I was opening the pinot noir, but that's ok because it was served with salmon and a beef soup. And this syrah was extremely smooth, integrated. Pretty red fruit and kirsch. Slight secondary flavors and just a touch of a barnyard funk that was largely in the background. I may have had too high of hopes for Rhys syrah, I've heard they're phenomal. This was pleasant enough, but there's lots of good syrah in California, and this is one.

Saturday hangout at Domaine (Chicago, IL): Very nice to cross paths with an older edition of this wine. It's lost a lot of the typical syrah characteristics, and while there's still some fruit here, it is in the process of drying out. Large scaled, but missing a lot of the elements that make syrah syrah. I'd be inclined to drink up -- this isn't the most convincing example of syrah at this age.

Tasty blackberry, olive, and pepper notes on the nose and palate with savory tannins on the moderate finish.
