  • This wine is for those of you who think that everything from California is overripe low-acid flabby wine. Verdelho. Popped and poured and then enjoyed over 2-1/2 hours. Crisp, bracing acidity and a clear, sharp wine with nothing anyone could call flabby. At first, the fruit was all citrus, lemon and kumquat, matching the acidity. There was light minerality, but nothing like Chablis, or like the Scholium Sandland. As the wine took on air, it developed additional fruit components, principally tropical like guava, with a bit of pear as well. Color was very light. The winemaker notes reflect that this was the low acid second pressing of the grapes fromt he Lost Slough Vineyard. I don't know about that low acid claim. The first pressing, Naucratis, is perhaps sharper, but with neutral oak and aging on lees after malo, the butter is gtone, there's no vanilla, and the crispness cuts right through. We drank this with arctic char poached in lemon juice and left over 2005 Rieussec! I picked the wine because I wanted something crisp with no oakiness and no creaminess. This hit the spot just right. I think I have another bottle of this. If so, I will decant for an hour because it opens up more with air.

  • CA Syrah(Alcina, Carlisle, A. West) Dinner with Aaron and Cheryl; 4/26/2008-4/27/2008 (Count's Manor): i do love the grape in all its shapes. this is a richer fuller version but not sweet or overly fruity. green notes, salty, sunflower oil? lemon curd with some time. when it got war it got significantly less interesting but a lovely fresh wine that i would not mind drinking again. at $25...its a bit of a strech though. and whats with the bottles? :) its a weapon!

  • Scholium, Alcina, Carlisle, August West at Mikhail's Home (Queens, NY): We opened the evening with this. The Verdelho was a lovely clear light yellow color. I don't have much experience with verdelho so I'll let the others comment. I found a nutty quality after this warmed a bit and some light citrus as well.

  • first day it almost seemed like someone waved a bottle of vermouth over the glass.
this was so much better the second and even third day. the oily finish became more tropical and it had notes of melon. viscous mouthfeel. actually became refreshing on a warm day.

  • Wellfleet Dinner (The Fish Guy Market - Chicago, IL): Dark straw color with a floral and spicy fruit nose. Palate has is well dilineated showing white fruits layered over savoury minerals. Unique and intriguing.
