"Nothing stands out," I thought, as I took a sip 1/2 hour after opening this bottle. But then, over the course of the evening, my appreciation grew, as I realized how this Rioja rolled right down the middle of everything: fruit, tannin, weight, oak. length... It was even right in the center of its drinking window. Eventually I realized I was drinking a benchmark table wine.
While most of us are looking for a glass that knocks it out of the park in some way, this is an all-rounder: perfectly integrated and an excellent complement to the braised lamb shanks that I cooked for dinner. In a world of aspiring, but frequently disappointing leads, I'm glad to have found this best supporting actor.

100% Tempranillo, 18 months in oak. Juicy red fruits, very smooth, cherry strawberry, relatively light on the oak, vanilla notes. Not sure expressive but nice enough.

Deep garnet colour. The nose displays medium+ intensity aromas of vanilla, coffee, cedar, liquorice, dark plums and hints of nail varnish remover.
The wine is dry in the mouth with a medium acidity. It has medium+ fine-grained tannins and a high warm alcohol. It has a full body and pronounced intensity flavours. The finish is long.
It is a very good quality wine. It has a persistent finish and very concentrated flavours that help to balance the alcohol and tannins. On the other hand a better example of this style would be more complex.
Can drink now, but it has enough tannic structure and fruit concentration to develop some more complex tertiary aromas over the next 3-5 years.

Not a total loss, but calling it flawed when compared to previous bottles, which were quite good.

Drank really well over a few nights. Deep dark fruit, nice structure in the tannins. Excellent QPR.
