Sherry Masterclass (Prince Sydney, 40 Hansard Street): Hello old friend, dried fruits, very slight chocolate, citrus, almonds, walnuts, sweet spice, marzipan, very slight wood glue. Juicy, tangy, saline, dried fruits, a little almost coffee note, textured burr, the nose is better than the palate but this is still very pleasant.

After three weeks of mostly chardonnay and pinot noir this was the first thing under flor (with the exception of the crittenden cri du couer or whatever it was) and it was wonderful to become reacquainted with an old friend. Lovely umami, nuts, figs, saline, pretty much perfect with some stuffed olives and toasted mixed nuts. As usual I find myself wondering why I don't just have more of this in the cellar...

Golden brown. Incredibly complex and almost painfully intense. Softens a little with air. Caramel, orange peel, grapefruit, furniture polish, and on and on. Good acidity. Very long. Outstanding wine. Not for the faint hearted though.

Sherry is so reliable, and this one also delivered. Nose is delightfully ambiguous, with lots of caramelly toasty richness but an undercurrent of austerity. Saline and complex on the palate - furniture, roast nuts, cocoa, fenugreek, celery - and has just the right amount of acidity. Really drinkable even though it's 21.5%.
