Decanted for one week and consumed over three. Clear, dark amber in color with intense aromas of orange marmalade, caramel, roasted nuts and baking spice. A rich core of sweet dried fruit flavors are cleanly sliced by the presence of bright mouthwatering acidity. What ensues is an ethereal presence on the palate that dances about for a seemingly interminable finish. Wonderful.
The Rare Wine Company and Vinhos Barbeito Madeira Tasting (celebrating a 20 year partnership): This was from the first bottling in 2006. When Mannie tasted a particularly extraordinary, yet limited, Terrantez from Ricardo, he tasked the winemaker with blending it to stretch quantities without diminishing quality. Fifty cases were eventually bottled and, according to Mannie, the taste is quite comparable to the original Terrantez; this was a wine that truly cemented Mannie’s trust in Ricardo as a master blender. The eventual composition consisted of 25% Terrantez with some older Tinta Negra Mole blended in. This was my third taste of this wine over eight years and it was perhaps its best showing yet; simply thrilling, with incredible drive and thrust on the palate. Flamboyant nose, dryish and pleasingly bitter on the palate with spectacular length. An intense, complex, mouth-watering wine.

TN: Kapcsandy, Angelus, Cotat, Felsina ++ (Our home): From the first bottling of this wine (Katrina support efforts). Slow-oxed for 8 hours. The nose is nutty with some caramel. Smooth on the palate. A bit of complexity. Delicious. An enjoyable way to end the meal.

This bottle is from the original RWC blend of 7-8 years ago, which as I understand it used more Terrantez than the current blend. The wine is incredible! The depth of flavor is amazing, and the finish just doesn't stop. The palate is strong with citrus and butterscotch, with moderate sweetness that is balanced out perfectly by the acid. It paired beautifully with the soft shell crab at the Columbia Yacht Club.

Med dark amber; nose and palate a little more linear by virtue of the bracing acidity with all the usual suspects of nut and citrus oils and carmelized sugar notes. This one drinks on the dry side so could be food chaser but my feeling is that Madeira is best enjoyed slowly alone with contemplation from a balloon (I hate how they are always poured in an ice wine type mini glass).
